Odds of summer seminar = v high
Odds of appointment = even; depends on where you live

Recs: definitely get the eagle. Need community service. Crank up the SAT's (take them at least one more time). Practice your PAE before summer seminar.

thanks for the feedback, i got 200 hours community service and i got into the summer seminar. Im working toward my eagle now, im hoping to have it by about september. i practiced the pae and did fairly well.

Somebody told me my 2nd degree black belt was just "average" and i laughed because they obviously dont know anything about martial arts. I have been in tkd for 9 years. Obviously west point will have plenty of black belts applying but i was wondering if I still have a good shot?

Yes!!!!! I got into WEST POINT SLS today. I requested an application march 31st and was worried that I was too late to apply. But I mailed it as soon as possible and received my letter of acceptance today, around two weeks after I sent it. I am very excited. However, I am also doing NASS Session 2 which means I can only go to West Point Session 1. What if I am not able to get Session 1 for West point. Do you usually get your first choice? Anyway, I hope to see some of you there, who else has been accepted?

Martial arts accomplishments are not just "average". They speak to not only your physical fitness but your ability to set a long-term goal and meet those smaller goals along the way. Practice is year-long, not just for a season. Leadership is developed from teaching junior belts. And you're right - there will be a number of martial artists from a variety of the arts at WP. I'll bet there is a reason for that.

Take a look at the profile for entering classes and make sure you are addressing all areas. GPA, class rank, test scores, leadership. Good luck!

does anyone know exactly what percentage of applicants who were accepted into SLS and then apply to WP get an appointment? does it have any affect on admissions?

There are a lot of posts surrounding this question. I've never seen a definitive answer about the % of IAW/SLS participants who have been offered appointments.

Basically, it seems to have an affect. Receiving the invitation means that WP has an interest in you. You're on the radar screen. So you should assume that you are being evaluated for performance and attitude. Please keep in mind that many candidates are offered appointments even though they did not attend the summer program.

Momoftwins... I'm sorry but I must disagree

I was accepted to the IAW (now SLS) however I was given the prep school, while a girl in my grade (same school) got an appointment but was rejected to the IAW. I even got an award from the commadont for leadership during the IAW

close to 50% of the SLS participants every year report as plebes the following year.

the only way it can affect you is
1) you learn alot, and I mean ALOT about the admissions process
2) you get a PAE, usually you get one shot, but you get to take the PAE during SLS and those results are entered into your file, however if you are dissatisifed with your PAE results you can take it again in the fall/summer if you chose. people who do not go to SLS do not have this opportunity
3) you get a feel for WP, you'll either love it or hate it. If you hate it, it's good you find out now rather than in the middle of BCT
4) BE ON YOUR BEST BEHAVIOR!!!!!!!! if you do something stupid while you're at SLS, trust me they will remember

No need to apologize. And I think we don't even disagree.

WP (and the other academies) have always said that acceptance at IAW does not guarantee an offer of admission. However they have also said that many candidates who either do not attend or are not invited to IAW will be strong candidates for admission and will ultimately receive appointments. This is likely what happened with the girl from your school.

Your experience also fits WP's explanation. You were an attractive enough candidate to invite to IAW. You are competitive enough to receive an offer at the Prep School. That's an incredible opportunity as well as accomplishment. I don't presume to have the answers as to why one candidate receives an offer over another. However, there have been numerous explanations on these threads that michaelburt and other potential candidates will be able to review.

Finally, you gave him great advice. Practice for the PAE now so that you can pass it and take that little bit of pressure off. Also, from what we have read here, it seems that SLS participants are evaluated and I'll bet those evaluations can make a difference - either way - during the admissions process. Therefore your point about being on best behavior is very valuable.

thanks for the great advice guys, i heard something about a points system for admissions on one of these threads and something about how the SLS will give you like 40% of the required points for admission. is this total bs? also.... who all is attending the SLS?

You should consider summer seminar as an opportunity to evaluate and be evaulated.
Your squad leaders will submit an evaluation on you.
A positive evaluation will not be enough to overcome other weaknesses, e.g. poor interview, grades, pae, lack of nomination, or one of about 35 other things that will go into your whole person score. [I can't refer you to the specific site but its available] For example, about 60% -- 70% for Navy -- of your score is based on academics alone. Remainder -- I think about 30% of score is weighted on "leadership" i.e. extracurriculars, and about 10% on athletics -- is allocated to various.

A negative evaluation, however, would probably be enough to overcome other positives that you may have. Especially, if you are marginal to begin with.

Bottom line, go with the attitude of trying as hard as you can. Tbby and MT are both correct. Don't over analyze it.

Yes. Total BS.

Bill0510's got the right breakdown - 60% academic, 30% leadership, 10% physical. They'll throw in some extra points for demonstrated interest - which SLS demonstrates - but not nearly enough to make up for bad grades, weak SAT's, or poor EC's. The high correlation of kids attending SLS and being admitted is due to the pre-screen - which is usually set at a level that would extrapolate to the candidate's being qualified the next year.

hmmm I'm not to sure about the squard leader evaluation, I know at the AF sumemr seminar, they just said it "during your stay, your element leader will be writing you an evalutaion which will be included in your admissions file"

at the WP IAW they never mentioned anything like this

oh yah, don't make the same mistake I did

don't bring casual clothes, BRING KAKI PANTS/SHORTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they will give you a polo shirt to wear during classes and a PT shirt to wear for PT so BRING KAKI PANTS/SHORTS and BRING ATHLETIC SHORTS!!!!!!

I'm not sure if they're goen out to camp bukner again thsi year, but just incase, bringing 1 pair (only one) of jeans/ out door pants wouldn't be a bad idea either

they said bring swimming ware, we didn't do anything like that, but just incase....

don't worry about the alarm clock, the cadets will be a good enough alarm clock (530 every day)

maybe bring a note book..... they give you a pen, folder, etc
maybe bring some money, they take you to the C-store/visitor's center
