What type of house is this? Is it coed, honors, quiet, loud? Any factual information about size, view, location, etc or anecdotal information would be invaluable.

It’s a dorm…the residents are randomly assigned and change every year. You’re luck you’re in west.

I was in 1st Adams. Big rooms. Big closets. My dorm faced Thompson st. near the front of West quad. Not coed but other halls on the same floor will have the opposite sex (unless you’re on first like I was - the neighboring halls were all male. Bigger dorms than most. Definitely an awesome dorm and location, you lucked out.

My room assignment says “West Quadrangle, 02X Adams House, Single, Substance Free, Non-Honors” Does that mean I am on the second floor? Is this an all male floor, and all male around me? The more details you can share, the more it can help me figure out what I am getting myself into.

all substance free rooms are on the first floor.

From what I’ve been told, any room number starting with a 0 in West Quad refers to the basement/lowest level. The first floor rooms (ground level) would have numbers 1XX, second floor rooms would have 2XX, etc. So it looks like you are in the twenty-something room in the basement level.

Joshqian, not all substance free rooms in West Quad are on the first floor. In fact, this year I was assigned a substance free room on the third floor.

What is the basement like at West Quad? Any windows or view? Is it like a cave haha? I don’t get the whole substance free…all the dorms are substance free if you are under 21, making a statement and committment to substance free regardless of age seems crazy, and then forcing me to be in one unless I can reassign with someone is absurd

I’ve only seen West Quad from the outside so there’s not very much I can tell you about how cave-like it is. I do know there ARE windows in the basement rooms, but they are just very low in the building’s structure. I guess an issue that could come with this is lack of privacy, since people could easily glance into your window since they’re so low. Try looking up pictures of the the West Quad courtyards for a better idea.

AshleyE, I didn’t spend much time in the basement last year but I did wander through a couple of times. The hallways aren’t any more “cave-like” than the rest of the higher floors w/o windows! And AFAIK, last year most (if not all) of the halls in the basement were all male (while the 4th floor was mostly/all female). Also I know that the cell reception was absolutely terrible down in the basement. I tried to text from the lloyd lounge, to no avail (and I have verizon, for what it’s worth).

So I can trade with someone for an Oxford double, a Bursley single or a Bursley double. Give me some advice, do you suggest I stay in West Quad although I’m in the basement in a substance free area or trade out? I am worried about it being dark in the rooms and nobody being around surrounded by a bunch of guys in Adams. I am in Ross and I am a very social person and don’t know anybody yet out there.

If you reallllly want a double and to not be in substance free I’d switch to Oxford. If you are a social person though you could always just rush in the fall and make friends through Greek life. A single is very nice and west quad is right on campus.

What is substance free like? Are these all a bunch of religious or judgmental people…or are mostly people like me who got stuck with substance free? Are there going to be strict RAs running around annoying me, knocking on the door to check for alcohol etc?

yes
No

The basement of West Quad is absolutely fine to live in. It’s like five steps down from the first floor, not super secluded. Plus the basement is what connects Adams to the main area of West Quad, so people are walking through, you won’t be isolated. There are also plenty of study lounges with tvs/couches in the basement. And I got cell service down in the Adams lounge just fine. Your dorm is in prime location- five minutes away from the diag and close to just about everything. Having access to the union everyday without even having to go outside is pretty awesome as well. Plus the west side of campus (state st.) is imo better/nicer than the east side (Geddes/Oxford area) You will regret trading it for Oxford.

Living in substance free housing means very little. Whether or not you’re in substance free, there will be people on your floor who will drink and/or smoke and there will of course be people who can have fun. I almost wish I lived in substance free my first year because a couple of kids in my hall just made it smell like weed all the time. I don’t mind weed, but I don’t want to leave my room and have the smell splash me in the face every time.

Alcohol, marijuana, and use of tobacco are banned in all dorms anyway, so it’s difficult to see why they even bother with the “substance free” label. Probably to give sheltering parents some peace of mind or something.

Bottom line, in response to your idea of trading in for Oxford, don’t do it. West Quad is in a really great location and isn’t a bad dorm overall. Oxford is just out of the way of everything and isn’t really that great anyway.

I’m in agreement! Stay in West Quad. I really did enjoy living there. And this winter when you’re standing at the bus stop in freezing weather waiting for a bus to Oxford or Bursley, you’ll regret the switch (or at least I would.)
