Wharton Chances

Hmmm, I realize I may be a bit of a reach candidate…I’m an international student (from Canada) not needing finaid (though I don’t think that matters at Penn).

GPA: 89% unweighted (with an upward trend)

English–86%
Calculus I–96%
Modern Philosophy–88%
French–95%
Principles of Math and Logic–92%
Renaissance History–87%
Art History–90%

Courseload: Most difficult, 5/7 honours.

Class Rank: 5/70 students.

SAT I: 1420 (730v, 690m)…took it in grade 10, so I’ll need to take the new one…shooting for over a 2200 (as essay-writing suits me well, and I’ve gotten much better at math).

SAT IIs: Haven’t yet taken, but I’m hoping for around a 740 in literature and a 720 in Math IC (will taking IC hurt me??? Because I never learned vectors, yet I would hope a 96% in calculus would show that I can handle IIC).

ECs: Lots of writing stuff–HS newspaper (4 yrs.) editor, some freelancing work, literary journal editor (2 yrs.), quiz team (2 yrs.), guitar and bass (4 yrs.), band night organizer (1 yr.) and part-time job (2 yrs.).

Note that two of those ECs (editor of HS newspaper and Band Night Organizer) I was only eligible for one year.

Essays would be very good to excellent.
Recs would be good to very good.

what school do you go to and what grade are you in? actually which province are you from?
i am from ontario and we do not have courses like Principles of Math and Logic
Renaissance History :S
don't worry about IIC, take it, i took IIc without calculus, but only got a disappointing 780, however, i think if i had taken Calculus (which i am taking now) i could have gotten 800 for sure.
so go for IIC

I'm from Quebec, so it's actually the CEGEP system--sort of a high school/university hybrid in grades 12-13. The school is divided into various programs, each with their own graduation requirements. For example, people in Sciences take basic physics, chemistry, cal 1/2/3, and advanced courses like organic chemistry and astrophysics. Likewise for Commerce students, except they take business-oriented courses. I'm in Liberal Arts (which has the most rigorous entrance standards next to the Advanced Science kids), so my courses are things like history, philosophy, poetry, logic, etc...Of course, you have electives (mine being calculus) and a core as well.

CEGEP is pretty cool--you build a schedule that's more like university, by choosing various courses at various times--i.e., some days I'm in school for six hours while other days I'm in school for two.

Also, I can't take Math IIC because, like I said, I never learned vectors.

Anyone else?

afaik, its only basic vectors on sat2c, not like vector calc (which sucks). you can probably learn it yourself with one of the test review books

actually, you can probably learn many of the sat2s that way, I know i used a book for physics

i never learned vectors.....i got a 790....no studying either.....plus, i played a game on my calculator for like 5 min during the test...if i hadnt done that, i wouldve got an 800....its not bad at all....dont worry about it
