Wharton requirements?

I’ve heard that it’s “recommended” that you take the math 2 sat subject test for Wharton. I’m assuming this is to assess people’s math skills. I’ve gotten straight A’s in my math classes including Calculus. I got a 780 on the math section of the regular sat. Is this enough or is this a deal-breaker for Wharton? I don’t think I have time to take it before apps are due. Thanks! Also, side question, is economics part of Wharton or is that in a separate school at UPenn?

I don’t think not taking the SAT II will be a dealbreaker for anyone, but especially in such a math-intensive school such as Wharton, doing well on the SAT II won’t hurt and will likely aid your application.

The major of economics is contained within the College of Arts and Sciences. You get the Bachelor of Economics from Wharton, but that’s not the major of economics. However, thanks to Penn’s interdisciplinary opportunities, you’re free to take econ at CAS if you want.

Terrific. Thanks. @thetester123

I would definitely take the Math 2 if at all possible. If you do average on it or a little bit below average, I don’t think they will hold it against you. However, if you score well on it, that’s just all the more reason why you should be accepted.

My son was just accepted to Wharton ED, he didn’t take Math 2 subject test at all.
He had taken Math1 freshman year and scored a 740 … but didn’t decide on Wharton until Jr yr and then was too busy to take the subject test. His Math regular SAT was 720. He had a final grade of 100 in Calc AB and scored a 5 on the AP test and took Stat at a community college in the summer and had a 4.0. He Is taking Calc BC senior year.

I don’t think it is imperative that you take the math 2 subject test if you have a solid showing in math (calc and stat) in other ways and your overall application is strong- EC’s, rec letters, and grades overall GPA (he had a 4.0 -lowest grade ever a 97)

You can major in economics in CAS but you get a BA in Econ, whereas in Wharton you get a BS in Econ. I am told that the BA in Econ is more theory where the BS is real world practical business Econ…

I sincerely believe you should take Math II for Wharton; yes, people get accepted w/o this test. However, the caliber of Wharton usually means that Math II (and a good score, of course) will make you a significantly more qualified applicant. This is true especially if you’re applying for a Wharton concentration that is relatively quantitative (finance, stats).

If there’s not enough time to take the test, then I’d really consider applying for CAS if you’re interested in Penn as a whole. If you’re really set on Wharton, then try to apply for a concentration that’s not quantitative at all (BPUB, Marketing), and you may squeeze by; but of course, it reallllly depends on your application as a whole.

If you end up applying to Wharton, make sure your Wharton specific supplement is very business related. Your demonstrated interests in business can definitely help you out here. If you’re interested in learning more about how to answer Penn’s supplements, here’s a link:
