currently I'm looking at trying to get a single bedroom in a suite in either blackwell or the other ac dorm. however my problem is that if I get into my FOCUS program then I might be in an un-airconditioned room. I know that the policy is to technically not have air conditioners in your room but I was wondering if I could sneak in a smal portable unit.

Are there any dorms that are better than others?

I think like, this year or the year before Exploring the Mind was actually in blackwell. I remember saying "I SHOULD DO THAT FOCUS TO GET AN AC ROOM."

Anyway, I like blackwell, personally, the most. My friend lives there and I stayed with her and it's a really nice facility and whatnot. The rooms are a little smaller, and by that I mean narrower than most dorm rooms, but obviously the AC makes it worth it.

There are no suites in Blackwell or Randolph (the other AC dorm) and I highly doubt the dorm that's being built that will have AC will have suites. So you can get a single in Blackwell, but it'll be a single in a hallway of other rooms.

Don't pick your FOCUS based on AC dorms. I think the AC dorms are crappy because they're so sterile looking and the dorms are like prison cells. You may think now that the AC is worth it, but I've heard many people (come winter time when it doesn't matter) say that they'd give up their AC for a bigger room.

They'll probably catch you if you sneak in an AC.

Personally, I picked my focus this year not knowing I'd be placed in a non-AC dorm. Knowing it was non-AC wouldn't have changed my mind. Then again, my roommate has allergies and they installed an AC in my room. If you REALLY want AC (and a decent sized room) and you have allergies or asthma, get a doctor's note. If you know a doctor who doesn't speak English, get a note (what friend's roomie did). If your friends' parents are doctors, get them to write a note. You'll pay for it, but it's worth the $$ I feel.

I'm living on the 3rd floor in Bassett with no a/c - and honestly there is no need for it for the months of october-april. When it does get hot, the commons room has a/c units - no to mention a bunch of people have "medical" excuses in the dorm. You can just go into their rooms if you find it unbearable.

I do know that this year people were getting placed in singles who didn't want them - i.e. there were more singles on east than people who requested them. Personally, I wouldn't give up the size of my room for one in Randolph or Blackwell with a/c. Somehow I prefer my 213 sq. feet with two full walk in closets to a 145 sq. ft. room with closet "alcoves." But it's all about trade-offs.

And the truth of the matter is....wherever you end up, you'll make the best of it and enjoy yourself. Just as I love my wooden floors and weird room layout, my friends in Blackwell love the newness and the a/c.

Yeah, I'm on the 3rd floor of Pegram and I'm in love with the weird room layout and the eves for the beds and such. I also love the wooden floors. (Plus-- I'm linking to Kilgo which is sweet! And again I have a third floor room with weird layout, but this time a view of the top of the Chapel, so I'm psyched)

Could someone please to explain to me the FOCUS program that the above posters are talking about? and how does one's FOCUS affect their dorm room? Which FOCUS's relate with which dorms?
