What about me ? A new comer looking for entrance to UCs ?

Hello, I'm new to this community. Can you give me suggestions. I am planing to sumit my
application to UCs mainly and Cal poly, UOP, U of San Diego. Below are my statistics.Do I
need to put some safeties ?

I live in Cal.
GPA UN WT.3.72 Wt.gpa 3.88
SAT 2200
SAT2 Math 800 Physics 800 US history 770, Chemistry 750
Over 400 hrs of community services
leadership: As a coach
As a planner and organizer for non profit organization
Commended list student
That's all.
Plan to major in CS or Computer software engineering. Don't know exactly the difference between the two majors

Chances for
UCB
UCLA
UCSD
UCI
UCDAVIS
UCSB
UCSC
Cal poly
UOP
U of san Dieago

Please help ! Will chance back

Just came back from school. Can’t believe nobody chance it. May be not a friendly site for new comer seeking for opinion.

There is a lot more useful information than “chances” here on cc,

I know I just act impulsive. Sorry about that !

UCB-low reach/reach
UCLA-low reach/reach
UCSD-match
UCD-low match
UCI-low match
UCSB-low match
UCSC-safety
Cal poly-high safety
UOP-safety
U of San Diego-safety?

under average gpa, average ec, very solid test scores.

your gpa will hurt you for engineering.

What is your individual portion score on SAT?

Computer Engineering usually = 1/2 Electrical Engineering + 1/2 Computer Science

Computer Science is just plain old software design and architecture

I can’t comment on the UCs but I can speak about Cal Poly SLO.

For Cal Poly SLO, they only care about CR + Math portion. For CP engineering accepted applicants average stats are:

Avg. GPA: 4.03
Avg. SAT: 1372 out of 1600

So you look like you should be a low match. But computer engineering is one of Cal Poly’s more popular engineering program.

For CS, you should be fine for CP.

I forgot to mention if there is anything that will potentially hurt you for Cal Poly engineering is your GPA. CP admission process has gotten very competitive, especially for engineering.

So perhaps you should consider 1 additional alternate engineering major (e.g. electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, etc.) just in case.

Are some of Cal Poly’s engineering admissions more difficult than others? How about civil?

I think you have a really good list of schools. Just make sure you have enough financial safeties on your list (if aid is necessary), since those private schools and UC’s are expensive.

Yes, Cal Poly is unique in that each of the majors has varying degree of selectivity. This also applies for their engineering school.

I don’t have precise insight into which engineering major is the easiest or hardest. But mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, and civil engineering (the traditionally most popular engineering majors) are the most competitive and selective given the large number of applicants; So yes, Civil Engineering is up there.

Everyone seems to love to build the floating concrete canoe at CP (a civil engineering student favorite).

Conversely, industrial engineering, general engineering, biomedical engineering (brand new major) are less “popular”, hence slightly less competitive.

Ickglue, my SAT1 break down is Reading 720 Math 800 writing 680

Very impressive score. My hat off to you.

I think you will be extremely competitive for Cal Poly Engineering.

The only remaining concern is the uber-bad economy will probably drive a lot of students to seek a cheaper but high quality engineering school/university.

So 2011 might be another very competitive year for Cal Poly applicants because of its low tuition cost, nice school/living environment, and its brand new engineering buildings complex.

ickglue. Now I am a bit confuse. You first commented may hurt my entrance to cal poly engineering. Now you said my test scores are impressive. So, do I get a better chance ?
What’s thedifference between match and low match ?

I have average gpa during my 10th grade. Since then I improve every semester. Have straight As junior year and carry into Senior yr so far. Do they ever look at my senior yr’s score report ?

You did perfectly in your math section. Obviously that is looked upon very favorably for engineering school; your SAT achievement should help offset potential weakness in your GPA.

Match would imply you are being accepted into a school that matches your academic achievements almost perfectly. Conversely, low match typically implies you are somewhat over-qualified for the school.

So yes I think you do have a very solid chance for CP and its academically equivalent engineering schools.

lol ickglue, you can stop pimping and marketing cal poly now. he’ll probably end up in ucsd or ucla.

also, the reason i used high match/match/low reach is just to expand the original reach/match/safety. it gives people more levels of difficulties to place you into. there is nothing special about high/low.

To each its own. Why not market a good school to good students?

And if you want Axemranger, I can market Harvard to you too, since I went there.

I think it would be wonderful if he gets into UCLA or Cal. It is always good to see others succeed fabulously.

And if you (Axe) do get into UCLA and Cal, go to Cal.

i didnt read anything, but i know that uc’s value uc gpa more than sat. But your SAT is very impressive. Its hard to say what will happen. You have a shot, but i wouldnt be surprised if you got rejected from both ucla and uc berkeley.

@ickglue

ha, i somewhat doubt that. (the harvard part)

@redteabag

ha ha ha. You are a very insecure boy.

And please doubt all you want.

I got a feeling that you are type that needs to step on others in order to make yourself feel better everyday. N’est pas?

Try something that might be good for yourself, if you ever find the courage and maturity one day. Try to praise others and wish others to succeed along with yourself.

And most critically, let’s avoid turning this thread into discussing your personal issues.

haha, alright whatever.

although i will point out one last thing before this ends, if i have an insecurity problem, why do you think it was necessary to mention you attended harvard?
