What academic subject(s) do Choate, Andover, & SPS stress the most?

All of those schools have excellent academics in all subjects. You can’t go wrong academically in any subject with any of those schools.

With that being said, Andover has a reputation for being a “Humanities school.” Personally, I think it’s a “Humanities school” and a “Math/Science school.” They have math electives that go up to Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus. They have opportunities for students to research molecular biology.

I’d say the same for Choate and SPS. Both have amazing opportunities in the Humanities and Sciences (Choate offers 8 economics courses as well as a Science Research Program; SPS offers courses in Arabic Lit and in Engineering).

They stress all subjects.

Thanks!!!

@ifax: Both place a lot of stress on all subjects, sure; but do you have any idea about which would be better for a CS/Math/Science person like me? Andover seems to be slightly inferior w.r.t. Choate. (I got FA from both of them and have to choose.)

Understand that all of these schools focus on four years of the college required subjects: math, science, English, language. Your fifth class will be filled in the lower years with subjects like history, world religion, contemporary issues, and the like. You will not have much latitude for electives until the upper years (at Choate, this means senior year) so, no matter what a school may seem to emphasize, all of you will be focusing on core courses for most of your time there. Choate “stresses” that you work hard on your core subjects all four years. Get it? ;)

mnchck: You will not be able to “top out” of the math curriculum at either school, so I’m not sure how either school can be better or inferior to the other. Between those two schools, I’d focus on something else to base your decision on, like attending revisit days and going with your gut feel as to which school you’d prefer to call “home” for the next few years.

mndhck. to build upon what ChoatieMom said, at Andover there are many classes in both math and science that are above the AP level. However, if you enter as a 9th grader, you have no flexibility in your schedule. Everyone takes the same English and history class. You are placed into your math and language classes, you take 2 years of science, and there is the expectation that you will complete your art/music/health/philosophy requirements. So the only time you can begin to double up on a subject is as an upper (11th). Plus, if you take 2 courses from one department in a term, you are limited to a 5-course load with a couple of exceptions. It is impossible to exhaust the curriculum.

Revisit both schools and choose which is the better fit.

@ChoatieMom @skieurope Woah, sorry about the late reply! I get what you’re saying: you can’t go wrong with any of them; and I’m actually going with Andover because of the… I dunno what you’d call it, the spark in them?
