So I attempted suicide and now my college is making me take a leave for a year to get better. Question is, what the hell am I going to do for a year?! Like I really hate the idea of just sitting around and being a bum and playing computer games. And I don't even have a high school diploma, so I probably can't get a job, but I did get into a good college if that helps. And I was one of those academic superachievers back in high school, so I don't have any friends back home to hang out with or anything, so I'm going to be really lonely...

Also, is this going to hurt my chances for grad school?

Thanks! Any help you can give is appreciated :)

You could consider studying abroad. I took a year off to study in Beijing, one semester, and then in Paris the following semester. I'm going to be an Au Pair (under the table, due to UK restrictions) this summer in England.
Since they're forcing you take a year off anyway, it's great time to explore those options and there's a ridiculous number of study abroad scholarships available.

To all those who are wondering how one can get into a college without a high school diploma: several colleges accept applications from very high-achieving high school students before they officially graduate from high school (e.g. after their junior year).

i think this is a bit trollish but i will offer suggestions anyhow

i would recommend you trying to get some help for your problems. that should be your number one priority so you will not make this mistake again. i mean you could always get a job doing something you have always wanted to do (we all have that one thing we wanna do but cant). i mean you can travel, spend the time doing some kind of research, or just anything. the world is open.

ok so if you really dont wanna take a whole year off could you possibly talk to someone at the school? like say if you agreed to get some type of help would they let you come back next year?

just curious- when you "attempted" the suicide, did you not go through with it, or did something go wrong? Sorry if this is rude, I'm just wondering.

You should do a foreign exchange program for a year IMO.
Good luck!

There's a CC'er that has some striking similarities to this person and may be posting on this account to obtain help; or is simply just a troll.

You have to obtain a high school diploma before you enter any college or university.

I wish you well. Don't do anything stressful for this year but enjoy doing all the stuff you wish you had time for in HS but studies got in the way. Give yourself this opportunity to be the carefree regular teenager. Look at this as starting over. Hang out at the mall, go ice skating, spend time with your folks, . Ever wish you could play the guitar or drums but felt you had no time for it? Now is your chance. Or perhaps start painting. Bum out at the beach even. Just use this year to chill and enjoy everything.

if you're itching to get out, however, there are so many programs you can do abroad that may or may not apply to your major, like teaching english in foreign countries, helping at animal rehabilitation centers, etc.

This seems really, really stupid of the school. Take someone who's already struggling and FORCE them to a spend a year in relative isolation? Maybe you should find a better school.
I say get your GED and look into gap-year opportunities. If you plan it right, this could even help your chances for grad school.
