I'm so nervous right now with 2 weeks till decision time(ED1)!!! I don't think I've ever been so stressed about something. Vandy is the only school I want to go to, and I'm going to be devastated if I am denied. Tell me I'm not alone! Who else is really stressing right now?

im right there with you tenaciousE

AGREED!! eeeeek

Here’s what you’re going to do: Spend no more than 48 hours mourning, and then stand up and apply elsewhere. Vanderbilt may seem unique and perfect to you (and many other kids, ED and otherwise) but it isn’t. I promise you that there are lots and lots of schools where you’ll have just as much fun as you’ve dreamed of having at Vandy, you’ll meet people who are just as amazing, intelligent, amusing, connected, and poised for future success as those you’ve dreamed of meeting at Vandy, and you will definitely, absolutely, 100%-for-sure have professors who are just as brilliant, inspiring, knowledeable, and willing to help you as those you’ve dreamed of having at Vandy. As great as Vandy is, it does not have a monopoly on anything that anybody is looking for in a university. It also has a lot of negatives – all schools do – but some of its negatives might really bother you, such as high cost, lousy dorm rooms, and a grading policy that makes As as rare as football wins.

Don’t worry so much! I don’t know you from Adam, but if you had enough mojo to apply to Vandy EDI, you’re probably a hardworking kid who will do well anywhere.

Hey Vandy’s freshmen dorms aren’t so bad They’re not specatular, but at least they’re new and clean! I know several people who have high GPAs too. Thanks for the optimism though. I know I’ll eventually get over it if I don’t get in and be happy somewhere else, but I’ve always wanted to go to Vandy!

TenaciousE,
Vanderbilt’s freshman dorms are awesome. It’s the upperclass dorms that mirimom is referring to, particularly for those sophomores who get “Kisslammed” (at least I think that’s the phrase they use). Hopefully the residential building program will be reinstated soon with some recovery seen for the endowments, etc. in the stock market.

Well there are still a couple of years before I’m a sophomore, and maybe they’ll fix up the dorms by them. For now, I just need to worry about getting in!

im stressed out too! but ive convinced myself i wont get in…(i honestly doubt i will) so that while i will of course be devastated about my rejection, i will be able to move on. on the other hand, if i do get in i think i will actually faint :]

I’ve pretty much convinced myself that I won’t get in either. The statistics are so daunting, it’s easy to find something wrong with one’s self. My class rank is what’s bugging me the most because 90% of students admitted in ED are in the top 10% of their classes. I’m only in the top 15% so it’s hard to tell myself I’m probably going to get in. I think this is why I’m so nervous…

we all wish you the absolute best when the decisions come out but mirimom’s post is brilliantly accurate. You know you are each highly motivated learners and you will extract wonderful educations whereever you matriculate in the end. The caliber of professors is extraordinary in any top fifty college and ditto on under exposed and promoted schools not high up on such lists.
No school has it all! Every school is only a partial match for your perfect fit. Apply outside your region and outside your comfort zone and be willing to be a top student at a college that might be seeking you out rather than “letting you in.”
Both of our sons attended colleges that they felt cooly towards and didn’t feel a perfect alignment with…as seniors in high school. What a difference April can bring to so many of you good hearts and good students. Stay open hearted. You will be immersed in a new community somewhere next December with new good hearts and good minds all around you.
no matter what for those of you who truly love Vandy already, we parents cross our fingers for you…but we assure you that as much as Vandy figures in our own kids’ lives now…there are many wonderful communities in colleges to embrace out there.

Adding my good wishes to the others here. mirimom’s advice to limit yourself to 48 hours of feeling down is excellent. You can find a wonderful school to attend, and be happy there, even if it isn’t Vanderbilt. But of course all of us hope that it is!

Just adding my impression of Kissam. My d entered Vandy in 2005 and spent her freshman year there. It really wasn’t at all as bad as some would have it. One plus was that everyone was in a single, so she wasn’t the odd girl out - and had the quiet and privacy she wanted, when she wanted it, to really hammer away at her academic work. Vandy can be distracting - d was able to turn the “negative” of being in Kissam into the positive of a strong GPA. It takes a while to find a balance between academic and social success at Vanderbilt, but it can be done. You do have to work hard for those As, though.

Looking forward to reading good news about the CC Vandy applicants soon.

i will be in kissam next year and i am not at all upset about living there. Once your at vandy many small issues melt away. And if you dont get in move on quickly. When i didnt get into princeton, oxford, or cambridge I was upset for weeks. I love vandy from the start and i am actually really glad I go here. You will find your place, But if it can be hope that its vandy.

^How do you know you’re going to be in Kissam next year? Unless you’re putting it as your first choice for the housing lottery… Or you’re a football player or something.

And in reference to someone talking about Kissam renovations-- Housing is currently working on transforming Kissam, but they said they’d be lucky to break ground in 2013/2014, much less get it finished by the time any current students or applicants will be attending.

Wow, I just realized how much of a Debbie Downer I look like in that post. I just wanted to clarify a few points made above, but I do absolutely love Vanderbilt (except for finals week… ugh. Seriously, if you thought high school finals were/are bad, just wait.)
