What AP test for English?

Son is getting ready to register for AP tests. He took English Language and Comp last year and got a 3. So, he’s out of Eng Comp semester 1, according to chart. His English teacher said this year the boys take the Eng Literature AP test. Will this test give him credit for the second semester of Eng Comp at Bama? The chart is unclear under the registrar, as it only lists English, with a score of 3 for one semester and 4 for both semesters. So, does he retake Eng Lang and Comp and hope for a 4, or does he take the Eng Lit AP test and hope for a 4?

If he gets a 4 on AP Lit, he’ll get credit for both courses. I’m in the same position.

Good question. You’re right that he’s tested out of Freshman Comp I. But, the question now is…if he gets a 3 on English Lit, will they give him credit for Freshman Comp II.

If he gets a 4 on English Lit, then he definitely will get credit for that **second **Freshman Comp class. But, I don’t know if they’ll give it to him with a 3 (since he will have already gotten credit for Comp I). I think I know who to ask, so I’ll try to do that tomorrow.

I’ve always thought that a student had to get a 4 on either English AP to get credit for both, while a 3 on both would still mean only credit for the first composition class, but m2ck will clarify this for us when she calls UA.

I think the chart means you can use either English exam, but you have to at least a 4 on one of them. 3 on both doesn’t count.

If your son doesn’t get credit for both and he has to take to 1 semester of composition, he’ll probably end up taking EN 106 anyway (I’ll assume he got high enough on the ACT to qualify for it).

I’m wondering if he can retake the Eng Lang and Comp to try for a 4. It is on a different day. Thanks, feenotype, for the tip about EN 106. I’ll look up the description for that course. If he has to take that, does he have to take it freshman year? Sure wish colleges took CLEP for comp like they did back in my day.

Also, want to thank you all so much for your input on this! Y’all are so nice to take the time to look into this for me!

Ask your GC or call Collegeboard and ask if AP tests can be retaken. I think they can. Of course, you have to pay again.

[First Year Writing Program](http://web.as.ua.edu/fwp/guidelines.html)

A student needs a 4 on either test to get out of Freshman Comp II.

First-Year Writing Program ENGLISH PLACEMENT GUIDELINES:

• A score of 3 AP English (Language or Literature) substitutes for EN 101 credit and places students into EN 102.
• A score of 4 or 5 AP English (Language or Literature) substitutes for EN 101 and EN 102 credit and fulfills a student’s 6-hour first-year writing requirement.
• EN 103 (Honors First-year Writing)–optional placement with ACT composite of 28 or 1240 SAT composite or ACT English score of 30 or higher or SAT verbal of 720 or higher (yields 6 hours of credit and substitutes for EN 101 and EN 102).
• Honors sections of EN 215, 216, 218, and 220–optional placement with AP English (Language or Literature) test score of 4 or 5.

So the EN 103 is for kids who didn’t have the opportunity for AP but have high standardized test scores? That’s great, as I know lots of small town schools don’t offer AP courses. Thank you so much for finding this info for me. Hoping for a 4 on the English test this year!

EN 103…don’t know why I said EN 106…probably because you get 6 hours for passing.

RE: honors EN 103

I think it’s odd that you need either a 720 verbal (which is CR not W) or 1240 SAT (m+cr). 720 is rather high for CR and that means that someone with a 620 in each section gets in, but someone with a 710 CR and a 520 M score does not? Odd. And, wouldn’t the W score be significant at all in this scenario?
