People keep saying that there's some Columbia student on Facebook who said the waitlist wont be used this year. There are others on CC who say that Admissions office told them waitlist wont be used. Does anyone have any legitimate information concerning this?

I JUST called the admissions office and they said they will notify students on the waitlist next week.

waitlist calls will start next week.

my councilor told me that the waitlist would not be used, after being in contact with an admissions officer

quoted from the facebook group for accepted students, posted by someone from the Undergraduate Recruitment Committee. I am assuming this is accurate, but there could be a misunderstanding somewhere.

just because they’ll be “notifying” us doesn’t mean that anyone will actually get off the list. that could just mean them telling us sorry, enjoy your second choice.

i agree with saf that their waitlist action next week might be simply telling ppl that they are finally rejected by c.

waitlistofflwaitl, didn’t you say that you’d received a call from someone on the adcom in another thread?

Yeah, you said in another thread that someone from Columbia notified you that you “might be” taken off the waitlist. Are you a ■■■■■ ?

Undoubtedly, he is a ■■■■■–look at his post history.

Sorry to report. Upon hearing rumors on the board, I called admission office late afternoon yesterday. I told them “I heard rumors that C is not going to use WL, so I would like to get a confirmation”. After a few minutes being on hold, I was told, “The class is full. We will be notifying students on the WL next week”. I pressed again “that means you will not be using WL?”, the answer is “No, not at this point”.

there is clearly a lack of understanding of the process here…no college can ever say something like this until right before classes start because say someone who put a deposit down at columbia gets off the waitlist at harvard and withdraws…columbia will need to take someone off of THEIR waitlist to fill the vacated spot…and it’ll trickle down to other schools from there.

disclaimer: i only used harvard as an example…not saying it’s better or that people should or would prefer it over columbia

^That is actually not entirely true. Columbia would only “need” to fill the vacant spots if they severely lack students. I mean they can live with a few under the expect class size.

^^well those are both not completely true. Columbia has data going back many years and has experience from last year to estimate (conservatively) the number of kids who drop out after May 1st. so if usually 12-20 people drop out post may 1st, they would have admitted students in april such that 7-10 extra than the class size accept in May. Not using the waitlist means they probably got to that class size + extra 10, and if 20 people drop then they’ll probably take some people off the extended waitlist.

When they say that the class is full, it means they’ll at best take single digit or maybe a number in the teens off the waitlist. and at worst no-one. Point is, if you are on the waitlist, expect not to get in and start getting excited about where you are actually going, give your new school a shot and consider the prospect of transferring if you dislike your college only after several months there.

I do hope that they will go to the list, but I agree with the previous poster. Columbia reported accepting an extra 200 applicants and adding 50 spots to their class. If their yield is unusually high, they may have as many as 100 or more students than they actually have space for, which makes it possible that they would welcome students who rescind their acceptances when they get accepted off some other wait list. Also, it’s possible that their biggest fear was that they would accept kids who would decide to go to state schools because of the uncertain economy. And if that was going to happen it would have happened by May 1.

But then again, all of this is speculation and the golden rule is that nobody knows anything.

this is bad news…

did they set any deadline for the receipt of the waitlist letter?

they said may 15th at earliest, no later than June 1st if i remember correctly?
why are they waiting so long if they know they’re not going to use their waitlist?

@monica123: But how can that be possible? Don’t all colleges pick at least someone off the waitlist? and btw, the notification deadline is July 1st. Let’s hope someone declines the offer of admission so as to create chance for others. knowing about rejection before is a really bad case.

i called the admissions office today, and they were like “we have no information regarding the waitlist yet unfortunately. we should know by the end of this week.”

okay so i dont know if that means
a) these rumors are false
b) they are unwilling to release any information yet, although i don’t understand as to why they wouldn’t want to announce that they over-enrolled…

yeah so basically, i’m still stuck here scratching my head LOL :/
