For students who have .pdf versions of textbooks (Chem, Calc), I keep hearing “you need to buy the clickers!” What in the world are they, and where do I get them?
Clickers are a way for professors to ask questions during class and record responses. Sometimes this is for credit, sometimes for bonus, sometimes just to gauge responses etc.
As an example, in Gen Chem, the professor will ask about 5 questions per class period and you answer using your clicker. The clicker is linked to the student and so the program records responses. If you have answered X% of clicker questions right, you receive a certain amount of bonus points. Many classes will use the clicker.
The clicker OU uses is called iClicker 2. You can find it at the bookstore (although it might run out early in the school year) or buy it on Amazon:

The amount of things I don’t know about is amazing! Thank you HeliMom74 for asking the question and Thank you WoolScarves for the answer!
Thank you, @WoolScarves! Now to find out which professors require them!
Re the Bookstore: by following the “Purchase Fall 2015 Books at the Bookstore” link in the student’s Ozone account (bottom of page), it can be determined if a professor will require the student to buy a clicker.
Do you need to buy a different clicker for each class that requires one or can you use one for multiple classes?
Usually it’s just one clicker. The student registers the clicker with personal information (student ID, name, etc.) Depending on the school, they can do it at the bookstore or online.
You would think that there’d be an app for this that student’s could just launch on their phones or laptops. Something like kahoot?
Definitely cheaper than having students spend another $50+…
There is no app. Buying a used iClicker 2 is perfectly fine though. Just as long as it’s not being shared with another student. And the clicker will be used for a number of classes throughout their time at OU. Basically, buy one early and you’ll use it all four years.
