<p>Pomona - top notch LAC
Cal Tech - world class science and engineering
Harvey Mudd - excellent undergraduate science and eng.
UCLA - excellent everything
UC San Diego - nationally recognized biomedical
UC Irvine
University of San Diego
Claremont McKenna
Occidental
USC</p>

<p>How could anyone forget CalTech, the second best university in the state of California? :(</p>

<p>

<p>Why do you say that? There have only been two responders on this thread, as the first reply is a double post.</p>

<p>The Claremont Consortium is a renown group of five liberal arts colleges in Claremont, California:
Pomona - the “star” of the Consortium, #9 on USNWR’s list of Top Liberal Arts Colleges. More like a traditional Eastern liberal arts college (i.e. Williams, Middlebury) than Claremont McKenna.
Claremont McKenna - Pomona’s main rival, #11, a newer college with a focus in international relations and politics.
Harvey Mudd - Another top 25 liberal arts college, it is renown for its science and engineering programs, definitely a place for a person looking for a PhD and rigorous study. Rumored to have little social life and the architecture’s a bit drab.
Scripps - the only women’s college in the CC, I do not know much about it.
Pitzer - the hippie college, it is newer and not as renown as its siblings. However, Pitzer students have the same opportunities as any other Claremont student, albeit an easier time in getting in.</p>

<p>The UCs:
UCLA - the second “flagship” of the UC system, #25 on USNWR National Universities. Renown for its programs in practically every field. Huge amount of students and suffering budget cuts like its sibling campuses.
UC Irvine - Really high percentage of Asians. That’s about all I know.
UC Santa Barbara - A beautiful campus in Santa Barbara, it has great academics but is also known for being a party school.
UC San Diego - the third top UC school, it is renown for its biomedical programs. Ugly campus, but in a very nice area (La Jolla, San Diego).
UC Riverside - the UC with the highest acceptance rate and lowest amount of prestige.</p>

<p>Occidental - a lovely campus in Eagle Rock, a suburb close to LA. A lot more limited in its opportunities than the Claremont Colleges (29 majors vs. 101), but a very good school nonetheless. If you are interested in staying near LA and have pretty good but not phenomenal stats, it is the premier liberal arts college in California.</p>

<p>USC - UCLA’s main rival, it is in a rather dumpy part of LA. It has a lovely campus and great athletics, with renown programs in its own right. Better at merit aid and fin aid than its sibling, and has a very strong alumni network. Still looked down at by some as “University of Spoiled Children”. Phenomenal film school.</p>

<p>Chapman - Do not know much about it. </p>

<p>Pepperdine - a relatively good but expensive university located near the beach, it is known for its entertainment industry-related programs. Great for beachlovers.</p>

<p>Caltech - the main rival of MIT, the California Institute of Technology is located in Pasadena, California. It is extraordinarily strong in all scientific areas, and competes heavily in ranking and prestige with its East Coast counterpart. Tough to get in and tough to succeed in.</p>

<p>Those are the most renown in the area. Some others are:
Loyola Marymount (another liberal arts school)
University of LaVerne
CalArts (a prestigous arts school)</p>

<p>Thanks everybody,
I will do the research on every single one.</p>

<p>You could add the University of San Diego, a Catholic university.</p>
