What are good jobs on campus that require minimum work..more time for studying?

To make it easy to read, I'll use a number format of questions, so that you can copy and paste the questions and answer right after.

A job in the library might be considered as a good example.

What is the job name?

Description:

How much did you get paid?

How do I sign up?

How much time does it require? Can you study at the same time?

you can tweak the search criteria as you see fit :)

Thank you. I tried that before too but I couldn’t log in…I always have trouble logging in lol idk why…and it’s just at THIS school. I’m probably putting in the wrong ID number but I used both the IDs that I have…help? I used the one on my calcard and that didn’t work. Also, I clicked forgot password and it can’t find my name. Is there a way to sign up? I feel like I’ve heard the word “callisto” before.

The first semester you work there, you do a lot of shelving books. After that, I’ve heard it’s pretty chill; you can go online, chat, Facebook, or study.

Thank you! Also, if anyone knows of jobs on the weekends, that’d be great too, including Friday.

I work for library security ($10.60, more for shifts in the evening and when the library is closed). Sit at desks, answer questions, check IDs at Moffitt, rove (walk around and tell people off for bringing in food), lock up library at closing time. So basically get paid to study half the time. A lot of weekend hours too, when the library is open, and it’s easy to pick up a few shifts co-workers don’t want. Keep checking the link weebly posted for library jobs, I think they’re easier to apply for than the jobs at the general workstudy pages and plus library jobs seem to expect little experience. Good luck! :)

Thanks! That was really helpful as well! I’m glad minimum wage is a LOT higher than where I live lol it makes it seem worth it to work. The only thing is that is it safe to get back at your dorm? Like are you allowed to use bearwalk or whatever everyday that you work? What do you do? Of course, you’re probably a guy, right?

Also, do you choose the times you work every week or are they set in stone? Should I apply for that job that weebly posted if I’m not completely sure if I want to do that type of work? Can I go in the first few weeks and see if I like it and be like I can’t handle work and school so quit after that? Or since it’s only 6 weeks, I can stick it out.

It seems like the job description in there is diff. from what you do, so is it really? Or would I be doing what you do? You’re job sounds better to me.

I don’t know exactly how competitive it is to get a job as a security monitor, but they basically get paid to study for nearly their entire shift. The (slight) downside is that I think pay starts at around $8.00 or so, but it could be higher.

Any job where you man a desk is a good bet to give you lots of studying/goofing off time. That’s where I would start looking if this is you primary goal. Pay for mail clerks starts at around $11/hour at the units.

About scheduling, campus employers realize that their employees are also full-time students so they’re understanding of this. Still, once you establish a work schedule it’ll probably be constant from week to week during the semester simply because of logistics purposes.

You are allowed to use Bearwalk every night if necessary.

You are allowed to leave a job for any reason after giving two weeks’ notice. However, note that this may hamper your ability to get future jobs on campus. I’ve only known one person to quit a job because she couldn’t handle class and work (and she was taking over 20 units), so I think it’s a greater possibility that you would be able to request fewer hours or give some of your shifts to coworkers if you begin to feel overwhelmed by school.

I don’t know what the official description is, but it IS probably much less fun-sounding. btw, I’m a security monitor and i’m pretty sure 10.60 is the starting (and permament) pay for all of us there sans the grad students – no bump up if you become a workshift leader, but definitely above minimum wage. We’re pretty much all work-study students, so they library technically only pays us half of our wage (the other half is paid by the federal program), thus making us cheap labor. I am female, also…so I get discouraged not to go lock the Moffitt classrooms by myself at night (extremely creepy place). Not sure whether to be insulted or relieved to not do that. xP

It depends where you live too. I usually live on northside, a block from campus, so I mostly go through campus at night, which is fairly safe though empty. I’ve never felt so unsafe that I’ve had to use Bearwalk. Sometimes I catch one of the night buses.

You basically get stuck with the shifts you’re hired for, in all of the library positions I’ve applied for. Of course, you can get a sub once and a while. You might as well apply and see if you like it or not. Start out with fewer shifts and add on more hours when they’re available and when you feel more confident about managing your time.

Here’s the description:

Search new library books in online database to find matching records. Search Millennium catalog to verify the library’s current holdings. Add records to our catalog using online database.

Also it says “work study students only–min. $3000 award”

So does that mean the 3000 is only for work study students or only work study students can WORK there? It’s on weebly’s website post if you want to see it again.

I’m not a “work study student” so can I choose to do it if I don’t need financial aid? If half the money goes to the school then I don’t want to do it lol I have to save up for something that I want and its $8000. Not a car btw. How do I get the mail room job?

Thanks Woolybugger btw for ur answers. They were helpful.

I never got the answer to this…but does anyone know how to log on to the website that was posted above not weeblys

right now they only want work study students. after five days, if there aren’t enough applicants, they’ll mark the job as “work study preferred.” (which is what you’re looking for, if you don’t have work study). be sure to check the jobs board outside of 110 doe – sometimes there’s jobs online listed that haven’t been taken down yet, so that board is more accurate as to what’s actually available for interviews.

maybe you can convert loans to work study with the financial aid office?

sorry if I didn’t explain work study more clearly. we get the whole $10.60/hour, it’s just that the pay isn’t all directly from the library. The government pays part of our paycheck. Thus, it’s cheaper for the library to get more work study workers and why we get a leg up in the campus job search.

I don’t have any loans so I don’t think I can do that? Oh well.
