what are good prep books for CHEMISTRY

i need to know some good books that explain all concepts very clearly... thanks

ur chem text book…thats what im using

Personally, I’d go for Arco’s AP Chemistry book + SAT2 topic list. (You can most likely obtain the latter from your guidance counselor/college counselor.)

After taking the Chem SAT2 last month, I found that studying from Arco was insanely helpful.

If you don’t want to go with AP Chem stuff, I flipped through Princeton Review and thought that it was okay.

Hope that helps!

AP Chemistry? wouldn’t the material covered be a bit excessive?

Use PR…don’t overwhelm yourselves w/ AP Chemistry textbooks because about half the stuff in the book are useless, even in AP Chemistry.

When I took a diagnostic test, I got a 680 on the test, but after using the PR book, I raised my score to a 790-800.

or you can just use your school text book without paying a whole buncha money on a book you are just going to use once…id check the library first.

what if i happened to have taken chemistry in 9th grade and no longer have a textbook… im trying to raise my 670 from freshman year into 750+. is that possible?

kaplan was an amazing help to me. then again, i had an amazing teacher. ive heard good things about barron’s also though.

barrons for review, pr for practice tests. barrons practice tests are crazy, but the review was awesome

i would say the barrons review will over-prep you and the practice tests are crazy - but you’ll find the actual test easy.

and pr has some pretty close-to-real practice tests, but the review usually miss out some points. so if you want to be in the so-called “top calliber”, i would say barron;s.

the best way to save time is to take the AP chem test first and the SATII test right after that, it will save you a lot of time, since u wont need to study much.

okay, so i have both barrons AND pr from 9th grade. would i need to get newer editions or no?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-subject-tests-preparation/358168-list-best-review-books.html

I took chem last year, and I thought the review material from Barron’s was the best but their practice tests were unrealistic. Basically review all you can, take many practice tests, and don’t get discouraged! My real score was much higher than most of my practice tests (my first practice test was in Kaplan and I got a 650, while my real score was 100 pts higher)
good luck
and also, review the colors of ions!

awesome… but do u think the 2007 barrons edition would suffice?

ask your teacher to borrow one, maybe an old one?

actually i found my textbook in my closet. so i’m gonna go with princeton review first, then barrons, and then my textbook

ThinkTank Learning’s book is fantastic (not a big name, but the material is easy to understand, yet comprehensive)

it especially helps in terms of teaching new/rusty concepts.

5 practice tests + chapter reviews!

it’s purely amazing.

do not use your ap chem book.
waste of time! use at least a dedicated sat 2 chem book.
i did princeton review and then barrons (barrons makes mistakes, but its hard, so if you can score like 670-720 on those, you can really do at least 780.)

is the thinktank book enough to bring my score up to 750+?

I think so. I took the June 09 SAT II in Chem, and I’ll let you know my score. I didn’t take a Chem AP class or anything, it was just regular Chemistry. I’m pretty confident I scored 750+, but I’ll let you know in… a little under 24 hours!
