also, what other colleges do you think i would be good for--im thinking either california or somewhere around ny, nj, pa, ma, etc.

anyone?????
ahh please

if you could give me your cumulative gpa, both weighted (uc capped) and unweighted ill do my best to give you an accurate asessment of your chances. out of state odds are tough to predict though. you sat's are very very good.

mmarsha:

UCB/UCLA: Match (out of state)
UCSD: Safe Match (out of state)
UCD: Safety (out of state)

do the uc's focus more on grades/scores or ec's? my scores are probably my strongest point or maybe the difficulty of my classes, so does anyone know if the uc's tend to place less emphasis on ec's?

The UCs focus more on UC GPA and SAT I/II scores than ECs, especially the mid-tier campuses (UCI/UCSB/UCD) and UCSD which use a point-based numerical system for determining admission. The top-tier campuses (UCLA/UCB) may use ECs and essays as the determining factor among statistically equivalent applicants, however.

mmarsha, your profile looks very solid, and you are certainly competitive for all the schools you mention. If you are considered OOS for UC's, I see you as a slight REACH to weak MATCH for UCB and UCLA. I think you are a MATCH for UCSD and UCD. You are also competitive for USC and Boston College, both Matches. Intangibles such as EC's, recommendations and essays will be much more important at USC and Boston College than the UC's.

For UC, your UC GPA (based on 10th/11th grade classes) would be about 3.9 ... UC places a cap on the equivalent of 4 classes (8 semesters) for additional weighting of AP/Honors classes. (UC has a very good understanding of Honors classes that they approve for additional weighting WITHIN California; however, outside of CA, not all Honors classes are deemed acceptable to them for additional weighting because they are not familiar with course content. In your case, you should be OK, as you have likely reached the cap.)

Regarding your EC's, it will be important that you bring out leadership or significant achievements with each major activity. Very often, without the leadership roles, participation alone is not given much stature. One last thing, with your PSAT score, depending on the state, you are right on the cusp of cutoff for National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist. In CA, the cutoff has been right around 216, plus/minus. Also, for the UC's, not all campuses participate in the program itself -- Berkeley does not.
