I am in California looking to apply at Cal Poly Pomona for electrical engineering. I moved from to California from florida after my freshman year because my dad found job opportunities and I couldn’t control that. My gpa dropped to a 2.0 my sophomore year because I had trouble adjusting to the new environment. I just completed my first semester as an IB Junior
Freshman year GPA (Florida): 3.4 unw 4.0 w
Sophomore year (CA):2.0 w
Junior year 1st semester:3.4 unw 4.0 w
I haven’t taken the SAT or ACT yet but on my practice SAT tests I have been getting between 1670-1750
My total GPA as of junior year first semester is 3.2 weighted
CSU GPA? Use only 10-11th grades for the calculation. http://www.csumentor.com/planning/high_school/gpa_calculator.asp
CPP uses the eligibility index to rank applicants. (CSU GPA x200)+ (ACT comp x10) or (CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math+CR). You GPA looks low for a competitive major such as EE. Get some high test scores and this could offset your GPA. Calculate your EI when you have your scores and aim for an EI of around 3800+ SAT/900+ ACT and you might have a chance.
Good Luck.
Can I go to Cal Poly as undecided for a major, then switch to electrical engineering if I’m in?
I don’t know if I made a mistake calculating the GPA or the fact that a majority of my classes are weighted (IB) but it came out to be 3.36 CSU
EE is an impacted majot at CPP along with Undeclared. CPP recommends that when you apply that you select a non-impacted major as 2nd choice if applying to an impacted major so going undeceided will not work. Here is a list of impacted majors.
http://www.cpp.edu/~admissions/advising/impacted-majors.shtml
I would select an alternate major which you would be happy to pursue in case you cannot change into EE if accepted. Here is a CSU impacted major matrix for reference.
http://www.calstate.edu/SAS/documents/impactedprogramsmatrix.pdf
I would also consider other CSU campuses where EE is not impacted. Much will depend upon your test scores since impacted majors also have minimum test scores required for consideration. Meeting the minimum is no guarantee. Much will depend upon the competitiveness of the applicant pool. Work hard on your test prep and good luck.
Term Applying for Transfer: Fall 2016
Community college gpa: 2.94
Major applied: Chemical Engineering
Status: Decision Pending
Transcripts were sent in because the major was impacted, but on my cpp to-do list it still says that they need my transcripts. After Spring 2016, if all goes well then I’ll complete all the required classes except Electricity and Magnetism Physics. In my opinion, I don’t think m don’t think I’ll have a shot at CPP but i’m just giving it a try since it is one of my dream schools.
My man, I got into CPP with a bunch of Cs and Ds. I had a 2060 SAT score, above the average but below my standards, but whatever. Do WELL on the SAT. It’s pretty important
