What are my chances at Stanford, Harvard, Rice, UT, etc.?

Hi! I know that these chance posts can get annoying, but the whole college admissions process is really stressing me out, and I want to know if I’m getting in over my head before I start applying to so many top schools. My parents and friends seem to think I have a good shot, but knowing how many amazing applicants are out there makes me a lot more skeptical. I know just my stats won’t provide a completely accurate estimation of my chances, but any feedback is much appreciated!

Volunteer Work:

June 2013- June 2015
~150 Hours at the North Cypress Medical Center in Sports Medicine, Radiology, Endocrinology, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, and the OR- the OR experience was very cool and will probably be the subject of one of my essays. I saw tons of procedures over several summers, and was selected as the only volunteer in the OR- saw about 30-40 surgeries in 3 weeks RIGHT next to the surgeon. Amazing experience!

August 2015- Present
Loving Arms Pet Placement, about 3 hrs/week- fed, cleaned up after, and played with dogs and cats, also really loved this!

Work Experience:

June 2010- December 2014: Taste of Asia, 15 hrs/week
Worked at my parent’s business to help support our family income after my dad lost his job- was involved in every aspect of running the business including the sale, production, and packaging of the food. Really humbling and meaningful experience.

October 2015- Present: Pharmacy Technician Trainee at Walgreens, 5 hrs/week
Prepared prescriptions, stocked medications, customer service, etc.- training to be certified at the end of the school year

School Wide: Distinguished Honor Roll (2012-2014), Honor Roll (2014-2015), Outstanding Achievement in Spanish I (2013-2014), National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta

Region Wide: 5-Time Medalist in Science Olympiad (as mentioned above), 2nd in Business Math in FBLA, 3rd in Business Calculations in FBLA

State Wide: 2x State Qualifier for FBLA in Business Math and Business Calculations

Nation Wide: AP Scholar with Honor

I know my honors section is a little shabby, but I really did do the best I could with the opportunities I had and my parent’s low income. I’m hoping I can finish a research project before I submit my apps to help my chances. My essays should be pretty good. Here’s my college list:

Harvard
Stanford
Columbia
Rice (recently had an interview, it went really really well)
Johns Hopkins
UT Austin
(maybe?) UPenn

Any thoughts on the list would be GREAT, thank you so much for your time!

-Academics and ECs are very good

-Ivies- relatively good chance, but you never know because you might not make it to any of them
-Standford- automatic reach because of the acceptance rate. Also, you’re going against the best of the best (like Malala, the Nobel Peace Prize Winner)
-Rice and JHU- relatively good chance
-UT Austin- definite acceptance (but things can happen)

-Keep some safety schools on your application list because you never know if you’re rejected from the schools you just listed
-Hope this helps and good luck applying!

It did help, thank you!

I think you might be competitive for Stanford and the Ivies. Your essays need to be better than “pretty good”, though. Give yourself time to get lots of feedback on them.

What about letters of recommendation?

And mind your punctuation; use an apostrophe after the “s” on the end of a plural noun to indicate possession. “parents’ low income”.

Oh, whoops, how embarrassing… I asked my trigonometry teacher who knows me really well for a recommendation (most likely 10/10), and my English teacher (probably 9/10) for a recommendation letter. My 11th grade science teacher moved, unfortunately, and I don’t have his contact information, but a supplementary recommendation from one of my science club sponsors might make up for that.

I will try my best to write some god-tier essays, haha. Thanks for the feedback, justonedad!

Everything is competitive for the ivies, so you will definitely have a chance. I agree with @JustOneDad though, work a lot on your essays because the ivies and Stanford want kids that will standout, since tons of kids applying will have similar GPA and test scores to yourself, so you need a way to stand out.

Thanks for the feedback @Northwood16! I really just wanted to know if Stanford/Ivies were a complete reach or not, so this makes me feel a little bit better. I will definitely polish up those essays!

UT Austin- Safety
Rice- High Match
Stanford/Columbia/Harvard/UPenn- Reach for everyone

Your stats look great, and I think you should definitely apply to these schools. Good Luck!

Thanks @QuiteAverage90, good luck to you too!
