Please Chance Me!! Thank You :D

what is this business that you started that you mentioned several times?

Wow we’re really really alike. I’m Asian going to a large, competitive public high school, I got a 2400 on the SAT but have a little lower grades, I’m a black belt in taekwondo, I’ve qualified for the AIME a couple times, and I’ve done a decent amount of medical volunteer work. I applied to every single Ivy plus Duke, UVa, and NYU and (probably not what you really want to hear) was rejected from every single Ivy. I did get into Duke (where I’ll be studying economics next year), UVa (with honors), and NYU Stern.

The difference, however, between us is decently big. You’ve shown a lot more leadership and initiative than I have. Wharton is really looking for those that have proven themselves to be future business-type people. I think you’ve got that with your internships and business experience, and I think you should try and emphasize that part. I’d also like to know what that business actually is. One thing I would recommend is actually not working with a counselor on your essays and application. All schools love students that really care, and I’d recommend spending that time researching the schools and what not. Working so closely with somebody else, you run the risk of really losing yourself and coming out with a polished but stiff essay.

As for chancing, I’d say you have a good shot at the Ivies, probably a coin flip for Wharton ED. Being an international won’t be a problem for the Ivies and Stanford, but depending on how safe your safeties are, you might actually run into some trouble there.

thank you for your response!!
My business is selling electronic items via internet (ex. computer chips, ipod cases, etc.) We are also connected through Amazon.
What kind of extracurriculars did you do in high school and are you getting financial aid at Duke? (because I really need financial aid)

And my next year APs include: AP Stat, AP Lang and Comp, AP Bio, AP Psychology, AP Econ, AP Gov

My main EC was taekwondo. I did very well on a state level and placed in a national tournament. I was also in math club and science club and won a bunch of awards for those as well. There’s honestly not much more than that; ECs were probably the weakest part of my app.

My chance thread, if you wanna see specifics: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1057282-chance-worried-ivy-hopeful.html

As for financial aid, Duke calculated our EFC at 47k (FAFSA said 49k) so we got 10k worth of aid. 3k is as a grant, 2k for work study, and 5k in federal loans. I don’t think you’ll have a problem with attending Duke financially, and if you do, there’s an appeal process and all that.

If you just keep up your hard work, you have a great chance in admissions. You’re probably going to be really tempted senior year to slack off a little bit, and really that’s ok as long as the strength of your application doesn’t slip due to it. Best of luck.
