I had over a 4.0 in high school, like a 4.2, and took a few AP/honors classes (but no AP test scores submitted). I got rejected by UCLA, UCB, and UCSD at first, and accepted by UCSB and UCSC. I was lazy and chose UCSC b/c it was closer without even finding out about the school. I just chose it b/c it has an art program (which is small & really bad).
So.. I have a 3.25 at UCSC, in my 2nd year. I really want to get better grades this year to transfer, and write better personal statements to make up for it. Last year, I just took all of my dad's corrections & it didn't sound like me, but this year it'll be different.
I really want to get into UCLA.. I think LA is much better for art, and fashion, which I eventually want to major in. what UC schools or universities would you recommend for art & fashion? environment is important to me.

Of course never say never, but they say on the UCLA website “The average GPA of transfer applicants who are admitted to UCLA is is now well above 3.50” so a 3.25 is not the strongest and Berkeley is probably similar or higher. In fact they seem to set the bar higher for UC transfers, since the page https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof11.htm says the average accepted GPA for UC transfers was 3.68!!

And if you want to major in art then you have to go thru some supplementary application procedures which I suspect make the odds of success harder and not easier.

As for getting better grades this year to transfer, I don’t see how that will help since they will make their decisions in the early spring without seeing any of your grades from this year.

There is a potential alley you might want to consider, which is leaving UCSC, attending a CC for a year (you need 45 units, I believe, earned at a CC to be considered a CC transfer) and then apply.

UC-UC reciprocity - as a 4-year to 4-year transfer, you will get near the lowest priority in terms of admission. also as mikemac said, you are far below the average UC transfer GPA of 3.68. it seems highly unlikely you can get a transfer into UCLA.

I might apply for UCSB also, b/c at least I got in last time… I’m definitely a city girl, I need to live in an active environment or I get depressed (like being in Santa Cruz got me…) I took really hard classes, so I got a lot of Bs. I plan on making a really good portfolio when applying to UCLA, since my grades aren’t the best. Would it be easier applying to the art program? since I am planning on completing all my GE’s at UCSC…

or I might just apply to art school & start over (usually lasts about 3 years), I’d just prefer getting my bachelor’s of art at a university b/c it’d be faster.

No Chance!

clee, does ucsc have campus activities at least? i don’t necessarily need a big night life, but DO need at least something going on! I get depressed as well when things stagnate and are boring.

UCSC has a **** ton of things to do but that being said it definitely is very different from what you would imagine. Getting involved is hard because taking that first step can seem intimidating but once you do there is a wealth of opportunities and besides the ridiculous concentration of hipsters, people are nice enough.

Sorry to hear you get depressed here, I’m from the city too but SC is a nice change of pace with its lifestyle. Good luck in your applications, and unless Art department admission processes are different, its going to be tough with that GPA.

Maninder: really? I feel myself stuck at home all the time. It’s such a hassle just to go downtown. I’m not an outdoorsy or sporty person so there’s nothing for me to do but work, study, dream of being somewhere else… Is there anything else, really?

I used to find hanging out in Capitola (beach front) on the weekends to be kind of lively, not so much anymore?
