I'm having a "life" crisis at the moment. I'm 19, graduated in 2010 and haven't gone to school since. My plan was to transfer to USC/chapman but those plans have since diminished. I am now planning on applying as a freshman but my high school grades were *****. I took the SAT for the first time this month and got this..

Reading:520
Math:410
Critical Thinking:520

Pretty bad I know, but seeing as how I didn't study or haven't gotten any schooling over a year, I guess I did great..!

I'm planning on taking the test again in January but the deadline for USC/chapman is the 10th and 15th of Jan.

I guess what I'm asking is what are my chances of getting in? Can I get into any other uni in cali? I was also thinking about studying abroad in the UK but I don't even know if its a viable option.

(I want to study visual arts, film/screenwriter, btw)

The reason I'm freaking out is because I feel like I've wasted the past year and a half, I'm going to be 20 in 5 months, my life has lost any since of direction, all my hs friends are long gone at uni's, the "friends" I have now are stoners who are doing nothing with their lives and don't care for their future. I feel like I'm stuck to a web I can't seem to break out off. I recently started having panic attacks from all this stress.

So is there any hope for me? Cali or the UK?

I suppose this thread wasn't a question as it was more me just trying to summarize my thoughts, but yeah, any info that you can give me will help.

You need to redirect your educational goals to something more practical, can you afford the schools you mentioned?
Go to cc, maintain a high gpa and then assess your chances for transferring into 4 year schools.

Do you have the rest of your applications to Chapman/USC completed-LORs, essays, transcript?
Community college is your best option at this time if you won’t study to get better SATs.
What were your scores from high school?

My concern is more getting accepted to a uni than its cost atm

I have completed the apps for both USC/chapman

Don’t get me wrong, I am studying for my next SAT, its just that if I take classes at a cc I can’t apply as a freshman, but if I take classes, not only can’t I apply, I’m also on wait list for english 101(class I need above all else to transfer), and Im gonna have to wait 2yrs to apply to UCs or cal states… And cc is defiantly not the place for me

I didn’t take the SAT in hs, took it for the first time this month, and my gpa in hs was about a 2.3 non-wieghted. I took ap and honor classes if that helps

My main concern is not going to a cc. I’ve literally wasted a year and a half of my life already and can’t bear to waste 2 more. And I guess in terms of cost, what ever I can’t afford, I’ll take out in loans. I’ve thought about it heavily and I’ve made my peace with being in debt

First, give a lot of consideration to debt. Even kids from top colleges are graduating without jobs now and unfortunately you don’t have the stats for a top college. loans are limited unless you have a cosigner with great credit willing to help you with private ones.

USC is an impossibility with your stats and Chapman is very unlikely. Unless you are prepared to pay in full (less any Fed money you may qualify for) for a third tier private
college, CC may be your only choice right now. And really, borrowing a lot for one of those is generally a very bad idea.

If you’re not looking for financial aid, and can afford to pay a full tuition of ~$45,000 a year, I would suggest you look into St. Andrews University, which is in Scotland. Scores/GPA wise, they’re a bit more lenient than the top US institutions, but you would need to retake your SAT to raise it to at least a 2100. What was your weighted GPA in high school? Deadline to apply is May 1st (I believe). Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
