Hey there, I just wanted to find out my chances for any of the UCs at end of Junior Year
Weighted GPA 3.3 (3 APs)
SAT: 2220
Other SATs: Chinese (790), Math2(790)
Club Positions held: Interschool Manager and Website Director of Chess Team
I’m looking to apply into the engineering schools for the UCs, particularly UCSD.
I know my grades aren’t that great, and that might be due to me moving over to California in my freshman summer from China, so the culture shock was quite significant. But my grades have been on an upward trend from a 2.9 in sophomore year to a 3.667 in Junior year. Anyways, just give me a rough estimate of how my chances look for getting into any of the UCs. And do UCs look at Senior year 1st semester? Cause I want to show them my continuous upwards trend.
They do look at senior year 1st semester. The weighted GPA is very low. You can apply to UC Merced, UC Riverside, UCSC. I would say reach for UCSD because your extracurriculars and GPA are very weak.
@cjchasinglife UC’s do not use first semester senior grades when they decide whether to admit you or not. From what I remember, the GPA they want is 10-11. However, they do look at your senior course load so if you’re taking rigorous classes, that’s a plus.
I agree with above that UCR, UCM, UCSC are the most viable choices right now. You want to go into engineering which is by far the toughest college you can apply to.
Perhaps look at schools like Cal Poly SLO and Cal Poly Pomona? Maybe SLO not so much, but I think you could maybe get into Pomona with your SAT score? Both of them have very good engineering programs.
SLO is as competitive as many UC’s. Your GPA will hurt your chances unless you have a reason for the low grades. UC GPA calculator only uses 10-11th grades. http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
UCR/UCM/UCSC are your best UC chances. I would look at some of the Cal states such as SDSU/CSULB/SJSU and CPP.
Senior grades only help keep your provisional admission and eligilbilty with your a-g courses.
As a few others note above, no 12th grade marks will be used in evaluating UC and CSU applications. The window closes in November, well before first semester grades are available.
You are a solid candidate for UCM, I’ll give you 50/50 shot at UCR. The other UC campuses are reaches due to your GPA.
I’d add Chico and Sonoma to the CSU list above.
How are my chances for a school such as University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, although they are ranked much lower, with a much higher acceptance rate at 68% I know their computer science program is very demanding. So how is that looking?
I don’t know enough about colleges most in Illinois to give you a valid opinion. Search for their Common Data Set. It will tell you about the test scores and GPA of accepted students.
