First of all, I'm an 8th grader that attends a public middle school in Connecticut(a nice small wealthy shoreline town). I gotten straight A's all through middle school(not sure what my GPA is but I know it is higher than 3.8). I'm in the NJHS(National Junior Honor Society), and I've won awards in poetry contests and science competitions. Several students from my school have been accepted to Choate and Hopkins over the years. I have alot of competition students from my school that are applying also. I have also played the flute in my school's band for almost 4 years and this year am auditioning for the state band. In addition, I am also taking Algebra 1 this year, when most of my classmates are taking Pre-Algebra. To sum up, I get straight A's, play the flute, have won awards, am in 3-4 school clubs, need alot of FA(middle class family cant afford $35,000 a year), and I'm of Hispanic origin.

I’m in almost the exact situation as you! I’m applying for Choate, Hopkins, and a bunch of other high schools… I’m also an eighth grader in CT! What a coincident! I’ve won awards and trophies… I’m not playing an instrument at the moment, but I’ve learned the piano before. I will be starting on the flute next year. Straight A’s throughout middle school, and I’ve participated in many art competitions. I’m in Algebra 2 right now though, because I skipped a grade for math. Well, don’t worry because I’m right with ya! Did you take the SSAT yet? What were your scores? What are your weaknesses? The SSAT is a big part of your high school admission, but they do look at everything overall.

Talk soon!

No, I haven’t taken it yet but I am taking it in December. I hope to get between the 84th and 90th percentile on the test.

That is really good! I think you’d have a shot at those two schools. Have you done any practice tests? What is your weakest section of the
SSAT? I’m taking it in December too…

Thanks and yes I have done some practice tests and I think my weakest section is probably the verbal section. If you’re taking Algebra 2 this year, didn’t you take Geometry last year so that would be 2 years ahead(Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2)?

I`m also hispanic, 8th grade, all As but one class. Play an instrument and have a strong sports background. Also community service. Do you play a sport or do theater?

I’m not really playing any sports right now but I plan to play some at Choate or Hopkins though. As for theatre, I dont really plan to do theatre at Choate or Hopkins but that doesn’t mean I won’t. Also Maddog15 what part of New England are you from and what schools are you applying to?

Ok, I got my 1st quarter grades from my teachers.(I didnt get the actual report card becuase my school is still distributing them, but I asked my teacher what grades they sent last friday when the 1st quarter ended).
Math A-
Science A
English A
Spanish(second year) A+
U.S History A+

Sounds like you’re in contention for both Choate and Hopkins. Which would fit you better? One is primarily a boarding school, the other a day school. Hopkins is less selective by their own report on their website. Choate has more diversity with students coming from 40 states and 40 countries. Are you looking for diveristy in addition to academic rigor? They appear to have similar matriculation stats for Yale, but Hopkins has less matriculation to HP and other ivies.

I like Choate Rosemary Hall but I’ve always wanted to go to the Hopkins School ever since I was young. Hopkins is closer to where I live and is a popular day school in the area. On the other hand, Choate has more academic rigor and prestige than Hopkins and also I would have a better chance at an Ivy League University.Hmm… I guess I am going to have trouble deciding. Well… thanks for your advice redbluegoldgreen, you made think a little about what I really want to do in High School.

Both are prestigious. I’d go with your heart. If Hopkins was your dream school and you get in, I think you’d work harder because you enjoy it more. I wouldn’t go to Choate just because you think you might get into an ivy more easily. Hopkins is a great school with a great reputation. Getting into any top college, including the ivies is a crapshoot at best. Good Luck with the process and your decision.

Thanks redbluegoldgreen, I will take that into consideration when I make my final decision.

Hey there, thanks for chancing me, so I’ll chance you back.
On your app. I can see you have a lot of demonstrated talent. In your interview and essay, make your passion, not only your achievement come out, particularly in one area.

Good stats.

And don’t think about which one you like better just yet, just try to get into both. Don’t let your heart make the decision before the time comes–just take it one step at a time.

Thanks ,intrinsically for the advice, I will think about what you said also when I make a final decision.

SSAT Scores came back not happy…
Can’t retake…
My SSAT Scores

Upper Level Score Range : 500-800

Verbal Score 716
(Personal Score Range: 695 - 737, SSAT Percentile 80%)

Math Score 686
(Personal Score Range: 665 - 707, SSAT Percentile 46%)

Reading Score 656
(Personal Score Range: 635 - 677, SSAT Percentile 53%)

Total Score 2058
(Personal Score Range: NA, SSAT Percentile 62%)

I think you still have a shot at Hopkins, don’t despair.

Thanks redbluegreen. So should i give up on Choate then?

If i was to retest what do I do Choate and Hopkins already received my scores. If I take it again and do better will they take the higher score please respond!!!

Yes, they will take the higher score. Good luck!

I got into Hopkins and I’m currently a junior here. I am DEFINITELY not one of the legacy kids, I applied for financial aid, and was probably in the same boat when I applied.

I was in the school band since the 4th grade, got mostly A’s in middle school, applied for financial aid, took the SSAT’s several times (79th, 85th, and finally 95th percentiles respectively), applied to both Choate and Hopkins.

Got waitlisted at Choate, accepted into Hopkins.

My interview went pretty well, I had the Head of Admissions, and all I did was emphasize my strong points and how I would contribute to the school.

Hopkins(19th best private school) and Choate(27th best private school) are both VERY prestigious schools and in the end you should pick the one that best suits you. Hopkins is more oriented to having you take the classes that seem interesting to you, rather than the orthodox math/science AP classes. Choate is also like that, but it is more fixated on getting to those AP level classes, and sending you off to some prestigious college.

Financially, I would say go for the school that gives you the most aid. Not going to a particular high school won’t change your future in any negative way.

Looking at your scores and other details, I’d say that you’d probably be accepted into one if not both of the schools.

I don’t know whether they’ve changed the application since I’ve taken it, but if you guys have any questions about applying or about the school in general, I’d be happy to answer them if you pm me.
