I'm in state student with a 3.3 unweighted GPA (hoping to increase to around a 3.35-3.4 senior year). Sat of 1330 (reading + math). Act of 31. Varsity crew coxswain + boat captain for two years. Founding member and vice president of Debate Club. Future Business Leaders of America member. Red Cross volunteer work. Taken a total of 7 AP classes and 5 honors classes. Would really love to hear my chances as JMU is currently my top school.

You have a very strong chance with those test scores and EC’s. Your gpa is kinda low, but guessing your weighted will be at least 3.6, which shouldn’t hold you back.

JMU: Low match

I agree with nova2nola – you have a strong overall package, but especially if your weighted gpa cracks a 3.5. They take the gpa as your school reports it, so most likely weighted is what they’ll look at. Also read on a JMU admissions office article/blog that they give extra consideration to people who have taken AP Calculus, either level (or IB equivalent). They value above all else the strength of your courses/that you’ve taken challenging courses. Then they look at grades and test scores. Because the gpa is on the lower end for JMU, you will be borderline for EA. But if you were to get deferred to RD, you’d have a strong chance to get in RD. There’s really nothing to lose by doing EA. Do work hard to get your grades up higher by mid-year. They like to see an upward trajectory in your grades. My son got in (entered Fall 2011) from in state with a 3.6 weighted gpa, about the same SATs as you have, 8 weighted classes (AP, IB) and some honors ones, and strong leadership, sports, and volunteer work.
