What are my chances for NYU

I'm currently a senior and i'm wondering if i have a chance on NYU. My SAT score is 1700 (520w/520cr/660m). My current GPA is a 3.3 and I have around 150 volunteer hours in libraries and hopsitals. I've taken a summer course in NYU ( not like actual NYU classes, it was a program offered by 1199SEIU) I'm currently trying to start drama club in my school and might join the bowling club (My school only has this one club). I will be taking the SAT's again this October and SAT II's in November (most likely Math 1 and Math 2). I'm a male and south Asian living in NY.

Also, are there any Universities around the city like NYU that i might consider? Preferably somewhere I can major in business or computer engineering.

sorry to burst your bubble of NYU but i don’t think u have a good chance. don’t take math one and math two also… SAT is VERY VERY low. also idk if it’s the best idea to do/start a new club senior year, it’ll really look like you are just doing it to get into college… i would most def try tho and throw in an application early because u might get in!

Your chances aren’t looking bright. Well below the bar on the statistics. ED is your best chance, but make sure to apply to some matches as well.

Your SAT scores and GPA are just too low, unfortunately. But, I think there are many good fits in the New York area (Manhattan, Queens), and the SUNY schools are phenomenal. I’d suggest checking those out.

NYU’s not within reach. In addition, don’t take Math 1 and Math2, since Math1 has a wicked curve AND is often disregarded by selective universities - especially since you’re taking Math2. You should take either a foreign language, a history, or a science subject test (or try 3 and send the top 2 scores).
Since you’re living in NY, look into the CUNYs - CCNY, Hunter, Queens, CSI would be matches. You can add SUNY Old Westbury, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Purchase; NYIT, if you want to be close to the city, plus Manhattan, Hofstra and Pace.
RUN THE NET PRICE CALCULATORS on each website and bring the results to your parents; get a firm number/budget from them and cross out any school that’s not within budget.
Make sure to have two safeties - schools you like (even if they’re not in NYC), are sure to get into (ie., are well-above median score-wise), and that you can afford (they should be within your parents’ budget without loans).
SUNY Plattsburgh or SUNY Delhi may be academic safeties, as would be CUNY’s John Jay.

@MYOS1634‌ you’re incredibly knowledgable. Could you chance me, by chance???

Manhattan college, Pace, and St. Johns

Say I get a 1900-2000 on my second SAT that I am taking soon, would that change my chances? Or would my GPA still weigh me down?

Odds are that you’ll improve to 1800-1850. But no, that wouldn’t change your chances for NYU. Even with 1900.1900+ 3.3 would put you in the bottom 20%. A score of 1800 would put you in the bottom 10% – and those all have special circumstances that make them especially desirable to the college, such as being an internationally-famous soloist, a math whizz, a grand chess master, a legacy… - which you’re not.
However, going from 1700 to 1850 would affect merit aid at most other universities I listed so work on that SAT as it could be worth a lot of money down the line.

I think that NYU is a bit of a stretch, but it’s always good to have stretches! Your best shot is probably to apply ED, and definitely sign up to retake the SAT to try and improve your score.

And since the summer program you did wasn’t through NYU, I’m sorry to say I don’t think that will help you a ton.

And not to be /that girl/, but if you would chance me back it would mean a ton!!
