Hello everybody, I came here to inquire my chances on whether I would likely be accepted into College of William and Mary. Here are my high school grades:
4.29 GPA
12 AP Classes
1950 SAT (700 Math, 600 CR, 650 Writing)
EC:
JV Math 1 year
Varsity Math 3 years
JV Baseball 2 years
Varsity Baseball 2 years
Varsity Football 1 year
3 years FBLA
3 years DECA
I understand that my GPA is slightly above norm (please tell me what average weighted GPA is though), but with a 1300 Math and CR could I still get into WM, and do I have enough extra curricular done?
Hi there! What’s your unweighted GPA? My weighted GPA is a 5.1 and my unweighted is a 4.0.
- I think your SAT is good, but if you broke 2000 and got somewhere in the 2100 range you would be better off
- Class rigor, you’re good.
- I suppose with a strong essay and good recs you would not have to drastically improve your SAT
- Regarding extracurriculars, you seem to have a good variety of things that you have done. Something that may be good is consistency (doing a club 3-4 years) or being an officer
- Good luck!
Reading needs to increase at least by 50points. 600 is bottom quartile. Your GPA may make up for it but I still would recommend retaking for the better shot.
Disregard the SAT. Mine was almost 200 points lower and was accepted to the College because I was able to show my intelligence elsewhere. Unfortunately you don’t have any leadership positions which are key but you played sports and demonstrated a strong GPA with those sports so you stand a solid chance.
You definitely have a good chance, just bump your SAT score a little. Don’t beat yourself up over it though, I think you’d probably be fine. John Hopkins usually looks for 2100+ (this is an example) and my friend scored like a 2020 on SAT but had EC’s Essays and grades to make up for it, so she got accepted. I think it could be the same scenario.
Hi Clydetheman. I am a current student at the College this year. Some important questions about your application. Are you a junior or senior this year? What is your unweighted GPA? Are you instate or out of state? Are you applying early or regular decision?
These are all factors to be considered in your application. There is no average weighted GPA because every school weights differently and therefore there is no standard scale. Many schools look at GPA in the context of your school and many find it helpful to look at an unweighted GPA out of 4.0 which may make it easier to compare across districts. If you want a stats based comparison from past applicants from your school, you may want to check if your school uses Naviance, which could show you where you may fall. However, keep in mind William and Mary uses holistic admissions and they will be considering multiple factors when reading your application.
Considering that William and Mary looks at mainly CR+M, I don’t think you are at a disadvantage necessarily with your scores. You should do your best on the essay though, because in addition to giving them insight to the person you are, it can also be a meter of your writing ability. You seem to be heavily involved in varsity sports. Have you talked to any of the coaches about recruitment? That could be a factor in your admissions.
Lastly, the best advice I can give you in your application is to be yourself. William and Mary seems to appreciate the story behind the student, not just the grades and SAT scores. If you are a junior and haven’t applied yet, I recommend interviewing and writing the optional essay. It shows interest and gives you another chance to show who you are.
Good Luck! – Shawn Spencer
