What are my chances? I will chance back!!!

I am a senior so the day has finally come to see if I am the least bit qualified to get into EMORY UNIVERSITY AND GET THE EMORY SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP. I need everyone to be brutally honest so I know what I am getting myself into. I am aware that the scholarship emory provides is super competitive but I just think that I have SOME credentials that not a lot of students have (read through it- you will see it). I just don’t want people to say my chances are good and then I don’t get in. That would kill me :frowning:

Anyways… here we go!
Weighted GPA: 3.833
Un-Weighted GPA: 3.694 (Guys! Does that qualify as a 3.70 or not? I want to apply for Zell Miller Scholarship)
ACT composite: 32 (I want to retake this again)
Rigor: Freshman year- gifted language arts and biology, cp French and algebra 1, and AP Human geography
Sophomore year- food and nutrition (cp), geometry (cp), French II(cp) gifted chemistry, AP World History, and AP Track lit.
Junior year- cp physics, cp algebra 2, French 3 honors, AP Lit, AP Chem, and AP US HIST
Senior year- AP Lang, AP Econ/Gov, AP Statistics, AP French, AP Biology, and AP Psychology

Perhaps this shows an upward trend? I would think that colleges would see that I have slowly but steadily strengthened my rigor quality in the past four years…

Sports was not an interest for me because I do not have the capability to join anything anymore. I hated sports in the first place but in Freshman year, I injured my knee really bad and two and a half years later, it still hurts. I went to physical therapy and everything but I still have a hard time climbing stairs at school or even running. Just call me crippled. I recently went to the doctor to check progress on my knee and its healing, and the doctors are saying I might have arthritis which is crazy because I am only 17! Moral of the story- no sports for me. I never had a job in highschool either because my parents could always provide me with how much money I ever needed so I’m not about to be recognized for great academic merit along with work. I did try to make it up by …

Clubs:
-Key Club (10th, 12th)
-Beta club (10th,11th, 12th)
-French National Honors Society (11th, 12th)
-Partnership in Action (11th)

This year I am joining a few more…
FCCLA (maybe)
Torch Tutors (great leadership involvement at school)
and maybe some more? not sure because my school does not have a great variety of clubs like they used to and I tried making one but there have been some complications.

I do want to clarify that I know this all may not be much. I wanted to try and get involved in more leadership opportunities but I guess I never made the cut. I think my biggest downfall was my absences. I had 11 last year, and I’m pretty sure that’s why I didn’t get accepted into other things. I tried out for senior cabinet and student government, and the leadership team but the first thing they said was that attendance is a priority! I also tried out for president of French National Honors Society and lost by two votes :frowning: Yeah, I’m that kid who’s entire life changes around because I didn’t win the election.

Volunteering: So far I have accumulated up to 300 hours of community service and I am about to get 450 hours by next March!

Sunday School Teacher (7th-11th)- When I was in middle school, I spent my time strictly as a volunteer for little kids ranging from 3 to 9 year olds. I brought supplies when needed, kept the mosque organized, and helped teachers with anything they needed. I just always made sure I was busy with something. When high school started, I got promoted to co-teacher and then teacher and have spent the last 5 years like that. I just realized that I should stop because I don’t even want to be a teacher… I have ALWAYS wanted to get into the medical field, so I just recently resigned and am moving on to more valuable volunteering opportunities. I got a few awards from here as well like Teacher of the Year and one to recognize my Volunteer Work for the School but that was it. Nothing special.

about 200 hours

Friday Night Youth Group (11th)- I only have about 10 hours from this place because the classes were one hour long every Friday. I just taught kids about religion and we did arts and crafts and had discussions. The group ended because the classes were not growing in size fast enough so the administrator thought it was time to call it quits. I was the only teacher involved, but like I said before, I am kind of glad that it’s over because I don’t want to be a teacher in the first place.

St. Francis Atlanta Soup Kitchen (10th)- I was going around for a few months helping the administration cook and pack boxes that would be taken later in the day to the kitchen. I had to go run and buy groceries, manage events and dates, and try to keep contact with volunteers to help later in the week. It was a great experience but I stopped because A) the administrator went on a month long vacation and then when she did come back, I was busy spending time studying and getting ahead. Like I stopped, but it was a great experience while it lasted.

about 40 hours.

ICNA Relief Clinic (12th)- this may be the best volunteering experience that I have done. I basically handle filing, getting money orders for patients in need of labs, I do triage for patients, shadow numerous doctors (all with different expertise-gynecology, orthopedic, etc), and a big load of other things. I plan to continue this during college, but I just hope this is impressive. Maybe it isn’t. You tell me.

I have already accumulated 50 hours from here, but I will be getting about 100 more in the next few months.

Dental Care Clinic (12th)- This summer, I shadowed a dentist and just made my way around the clinic. I also did other jobs like sorting patient’s files, and organizing the computer system etc, but I spent most time assisting the doctor- grabbing simple supplies and whatever else so the dentist can spend more time with the patient, etc.

This was about 50 hours itself. I have not continued this and don’t plan to either because the clinic was out of state!

Lastly, I also helped a middle-age woman pass her GED. She came to me for tutoring and I helped her pass… Does that count for anything. I’m not a tutor or anything, but I just helped because it’s simple material, you know?

So that’s basically all my credentials. I do have a few awards from school and stuff but nothing more.

Oh and basic information about me: I reside in Georgia and am probably staying in state for school. I am Pakistani which is unfortunate because many schools already have a load of the Asian population residing in school anyways! Umm… my parents went to college themselves so I will not be a first-generation student.

After reading all this, you may all be shaking your heads in disappointment. I wish I could be trying out for Vanderbilt and UNC- Chapel Hill but I doubt I have any chance. Can you guys tell me any good schools that you think I can get into? I don’t want to go to UGA but I will have to go there if I don’t get into Emory. Seriously guys, Emory is my dream! It would mean the world to me if anyone out there replied to this. Thank you so much

Oh, and I should’ve mentioned this earlier but can you guys give me any suggestions of what could make me a little more qualified for Emory. Just some basic advice is all I ask for. Thanks guys, and yes I will chance you back!!!

Oh my god! I keep forgetting to add stuff! If I did anything that can be written in the books as leadership, it was that I was a coach for a group at MIST. Some of you may not know what that is but just look it up!

XX I don’t want people to think that I am shy and that’s why I don’t have leadership in clubs at school. I am very outspoken and very entertaining, mind you. I just spent more time on volunteering than extracurriculars and now it has caught up with me…

@lololol: You are listing things with the amount of hours allotted to them. That isn’t good. The question is: How much do you care about some of the things you did and what impact do they have on you and others. You will have to write excellent essays that show depth of thought and passion to have ANY chance at Emory scholars (which many HYP admits will not get an interview for). On the surface, you have a chance for admission at Emory, but like anyone, scholarship (at least full scholarship) chances are low (even if your stats are higher). Also, do not make excuses for what you participated in or not. You need not be involved in athletics to have a shot at admission, so that needed no explaining. Please stop in general worrying about how your accomplishments will look to the adcoms and just present them in context of what they meant to you…if anything. Also, volunteering IS an EC…one that is extremely valued.

Also, if you aren’t interested in UGA, then why are you interested in Vanderbilt, the rank? You do realize that the two have similar social climates (okay, the parties at UGA will be more rowdy, but both have HUGE Greek life and known for social vibrance). If you like Vandy and Chapel Hill so much, then you should like UGA and I do not think you’ll like Emory. Do not apply to places just because of their ranking/prestige. I know it is tempting, but do not do it. Emory has a less traditional social vibe and is more “cerebral” and quirky than those schools because it has D-3 sports and thus the focus is more on academics and other social traditions not linked to sports. It doesn’t have a Division 1 sports scene reinforcing the Greek scene like at the other schools. If you really want that, then I would apply to Chapel Hill, UVA and Vandy as reaches and find safeties other than Emory (this is actually not a good safety unless you are applying ED and is certainly a poor place to bank on merit aid no matter what your score is) such as Tulane, UMiami (in Florida, not Ohio), or Wake Forest which do not have out of state bias and where you can maybe qualify for merit if you improve your SAT. I would also reconsider UGA. It is much better than you depict. No need to be stuck up. You can also maybe apply to Tech as a reach (what are your academic interests)? Also, Vanderbilt is looking for “diversity” (in their case more Asians) so if the ACT went up significantly (like to 34-35) then they may consider you for a scholarship. Vanderbilt likes to pull in students with very high stats so that can work in your favor. With places like Emory and Chapel Hill, it will be more random because they are looking more at other factors once you hit a certain score threshold (which is probably like 30-31 on the ACT). Also, your GPA will likely put you near the bottom end, rounded or not. It nonetheless is in the interquartile range, as is your ACT. Emory will settle for a lower range to hope for a better yield or get the qualities they want that go beyond scores (like “intellectual vitality” which unfortunately cannot be detected by results on a multiple choice test  ).
