In light of my first SAT scores, I thought I'd make a thread.

-11th grader at the best public school in my county
~4.1 weighted GPA
~3.8 unweighted GPA
-Will have taken 8 APs upon graduation (Lit, Calc, Stats, Bio, Chem, US Hist, World Hist, Government)

First SATI know I can improve it. On my last two practices, I have gotten a 700 and 690 on math and a 690 and 670 on CR.
The scores:
-670 CR (92nd percentile)
-670 Math (89th percentile)
-650 Writing (90th percentile)
-8/12 Essay

Some ECs include:
-4 year athlete having played 3 sports at varsity level
-Youth lacrosse coach
-Two year intern at US Senate

My dream college is Georgetown. I know I have to get around a 1420 Math and CR to have a shot. However, as I stand right now, what are my chances for
-UMiami
-USC
-UCLA
-Cal
-UNC
-Virginia
-Maryland (in-state)
-NYU
Looking for a roundabout of colleges that I could get into. Cost is not an issue and parents prefer East Coast, but will not restrict me from the West Coast.

I plan to major in Economics. I also want to be involved in a professional studies program such as pre med, dental, law. I am conflicted between which one to pick as I have always wanted to be a Surgeon, but I have a love for history and government which suits law well.

You asked about USC. I think your odds would be great. Maryland should be no a brainer since you’re instate. Regarding other schools, I would think you’d be in the running. My kids has stats in your ballpark but less EC’s and several of those schools have at least expressed interest in themmy kid. Not so sure on UCLA as I heard it’s very hard to get in out of state. They should like that you’re in 3 sports and your congressional internship though. there are many sites that have programs where you can run your odds. Good luck

I think Miami and NYU are well within reach and even though u said money is not an issue, I think Miami does give out soem merit aid, NYU is well known for not giving much merit aid. Funny, u and my kid are looking at some of the same schools And def study and prep for SAt to pull up scores so u have a shot at Gtown. Yuo could hit 1420 with good prep cause you’re close enough. You have a lot giogn for u; it would be great if you could get into Gtown

Thanks again for the continued input. Good luck to your kid. Family income is 275k+ and dad has been saving for 18 years, so he will let me go anywhere. He now works for Georgetown and they’re giving something like ~$8,000 off tuition at any school or ~$15,000 off of Georgetown tuition just because they promote education and he has a high up position there. Any aid would be great though so I can put the savings toward med/law/dental school if I can ever decide on which field I will pursue. Too bad that has no influence on getting into Georgetown.

I would be completely satisfied with going to UMiami, it’s probably my #2 behind Georgetown. USC would be #3. Miami has a great Medical Scholars program which I already qualify for with my SAT scores and it gives guaranteed acceptance into their medical school and provides lots of opportunities to learn and research. I think I might even be too caught up with going to a big name school because it’s your work ethic that will make you successful, not your diploma. I’m a lot like my dad in terms of work ethic; he was a country boy from West Virginia and went to WVU. Now he’s Associate VP of Facilities at Georgetown University.

Wow, you sound like an awesome kid! and your Dad sounds great too. Your parents must be very proud. Yeah, I think your odds are very good at Miami and I’ve haerd it’s a great place for school. Re the prelaw/predent/premed route, I have 2 bits of advice. You don;t have to go prelaw. You can major in whatever you want to and still go to law school. the real keys are a great GPA and LSAT for law school admissions. feel free to PM for more details if you’d like; I actually know some about law school admissions. So on that end, I’d recomend the predent/med route cause there are some courses you’ll want and perhaps need under ur belt to get in or at least survive The other even more important thing to take into acccout is that if you will be beyond bummed if you don’t get into eihter medical, law, or dental school is that you will want to go to a school where you are more likelky to graduate with a GREAT GPA. Actually, that should be a crucial part of your planning. if you’re ok with not getting into the above grad programs, then go where you want. I still recomend some premed courses regardless of where you study to keep that door open. and as a “premed” major, there is nothing stopping you from taking some legal electives. Make sure you also get some college writing under your belt as law school requires a lot of writing. I’m looking at your post again and actually highly recomend Miami since you are guaranteed admission to their med school if you join that program. You lucky dog!!! You are “forced” to go to Miami cause it’s the best school for what you want to do!!! Look up Pitt too. I think they have a similar program for their grad schools and I think they’re decent with accepting out of state students so they’d be a good option too if Miami does not work out. I think I only know of one person who did not LOVE Pitt. Most people are very glad they went there. and by all means, use your dad’s connections to connect with the academic minds at Georgetown. They should be able to provide you with a wealth of information and advice in your planning stages. I picked up a lot of my college knowledge when I went to a grad school similar to Gtown.

Dad is going to get me volunteering at the GTown hospital to start showing interest. Also, his boss (and best friend of 15 years) is going to see if he can do anything for my admission. If anything, I will have him as a reference. He was also my most superior boss at my Congressional Internship.

And @ctl987. I plan on majoring in Economics. I love learning about commerce and business and I also like math. Thanks for the kind words. So I will declare either pre med or pre dent, I can always take law classes and do internships. I think an economics degree would be great for being in the corporate law field if I chose that route. I will look into Pitt. Can’t beat Miami weather though!

Also, I think I will see about founding a Science Club next year. It would be a good EC and I could help tutor all the kids taking AP Bio, the hardest AP at our school.

Agreed on the weather issue. One of my kid’s optional criteria is “somewhere warm”!!! Great idea on the science club and other EC’s. Good luck. And when you make your decision next year, please let me know what you decide! and the websites where you can run your odds are cappex and college data. There is another one too that shows grid of where all applicants are on GPA and SAT scores. I’m curious cause I think you took the May Sat score. Were you surprised with the math score? Mine thought they aced it or at most missed 2 so we were surprised. But then we thought the CR would be lower too so we were VERY pleasantly surprised with the CR score :)

I was surprised with math. Honestly thought I would have got around a 750. I only had one blank grid in due to running out of time. Get the full score report in a few days. Everyone probably did good so it must have been curved down.

I’m always pretty good with vocab and reading so I expected a little better. Writing did not surprise me, I didn’t like the essay topic - got an 8/12. What did your kid get?

also 8 on essay. overall writing score was close to PSAT so we were happy with writing score. I feel like writing properly shows their abilities. happy across board actually but CR was 800(yes!!!) and 650 on math. Kid is lucky taht CR strongly tested areas they excel in given its importance in college admissions. They are also in running for NMerit. our state score is lower than urs so they have shot at Semi-finalist status. And actually, they are pleased as pie about scores. Being the parent I can see benefit in trying to pull math for top tier schools. Score is great but not “great” by Ivy standards and could hurt USC chances.

Update; Not as pleased as I thought after all. They were half asleep when I told them about scores Thursday. I thought they had seen them later on in the day, they had not, they knew about the 800 but today, I got teh what, only a 650 in math??. R u kidding me? Total 2130… “What What??? What?? Thought I did better” I’m sure you can relate :)
