Hey all, I'm a 19 year old community college student and I'd like to transfer to a UC next year, but I'm not feeling great about my chances. First off, I probably will only have about 50 credits completed by the end of spring - is that an automatic no?

If not, here are some courses I've taken and the names of them at my school:
English 101: College Reading and Composition I
English 103: Composition and Critical Thinking
English 205: English Literature I
English 207: American Literature I
Spanish 2: Elementary Spanish II
Spanish 3: Intermediate Spanish I
Co Sci 208: Basic Programming
Co Sci 238: Advanced Basic Programming
Co Sci 243: Programming in C++
Co Sci 290: Programming in Java

Going by the select courses, I figure an English transfer seems possible? I saw something called "Linguistics with Computer Science" at UCLA, but my college doesn't offer any kind of linguistics course, so I couldn't exactly met that prerequisite. Are there any courses you recommend I absolutely take during the spring to increase my odds? The only positive thing I can really say about myself is that I have a 4.0 GPA (although, I had close calls and squeaked by with a 90% in some classes). Thanks for any help.

Well, if you’re looking at that major, you need some math classes. At least Two semesters of Calculus and the recommended course of Discrete Mathematics. Keep taking Spanish to fulfill the language requirement for the major and look into taking the equivalent of Philosophy 31 is at your school. Should be something like Introduction to Logic but not all of the intro logic classes are equivalent. Make sure it is equivalent by using assist.org. Don’t worry about the Linguistics requirement. There are no equivalent courses at any CCC. You must take the intro class at UCLA.

Check assist.org for prerequisites. Take another year at CC and do some math classes and you will easily transfer to any of the top CS programs if you maintain that GPA.

Say I want to settle for the English transfer, are my odds still meh at best even with my GPA?

If you don’t finish 60 units by the spring semester before you transfer, then your chance is absolutely 0…

Yes, 50 units is an automatic no. You need 60 units minimum. There is no way around it.

My son is a Illinois-US’s first year student. He is doing all right and his GPA is 3.00.
He has finish math, physic and chem.
we want him to get transfer into UCLA or Cal.
Does he has any chance?
By the way his ACT was 35 and he has four subject test sore was 800.800.780, 760.

It’s is highly unlikely that he’ll be able to transfer to UCLA or Cal being that he’s an out of state student (preference goes to California community college and UC inter-campus transfer. Additionally, he’ll need a much higher GPA than a 3.00 to have a decent chance, and UCs don’t consider SAT or ACT scores for transfers.

The average admitted transfer GPA to Cal for 2012 was 3.77 and the average admitted GPA for an admitted UCLA transfer in 2013 was 3.72, so both of those should give you an indicator of how your son will fare for those schools. You didn’t specify what major he planned to apply for either, based on the mentioned coursework it sounds like a STEM major. Many of the science and engineering majors are highly competitive and often have an average admitted GPA that’s higher than average to the school. So think near a 3.8+ for Cal and high 3.7 to 3.8 for UCLA if it’s engineering or a competitive science major.
