Im a high school junior and I think im good, but im not sure. This is my resume of sorts. I appreciate any and all advice.

Academic: I go to a public high school in Northern New Jersey, if thats important
I have a 3.83 gpa and am in the top 15% of my class. This year alone I have a 4.2 GPA while taking 2 APs and 5 Honors Classes. I just didnt do as well in my sophmore year.

I took the ACT also, but im not going to submit that.

Sports:
Wrestling: 3 years, varsity 1 year
Spring Track: 3 years

Physical:
I can run a mile in 5:30, can do 12 pullups, over 70 sit ups, over 60 pushups, not sure about basketball throw or sprint, im in good physical shape.

Extracuricular:
Member of Engineering Club
Soon to be Eagle Scout
Junior Fire Fighter

Very impressive, cklizard! You appear to be relatively weak, based on what you posted, on leadership. Make it a priority to finish your Eagle Scout rank (…and congrats in advance on that, by the way). As a senior, try to take a leadership role with one of your sports teams (team captain) or clubs. You are well on the way!

I have already accepted my appointment. I was progressing through senior year with about a 3.5 untill 4th quarter with my grades having slipped to a 3.0. My FINAL grades, thanks to good final exam scores, remain overall unaffected.
The trend of “slumpage” is still evident though, and it worries me.

My question is, what is the degree of “slumpage” or lowering of GPA in an appointee’s second semester/4th quarter grades that is severe enough for that appointment to be revoked?
In other words, what is considered “going on vacation” for second semester in terms of GPA?

Naturally, there are no guarantees, but you have an impressive profile. Enjoy SLS and try to pass the CFA while there. Passing it early will remove some of the stress during your senior year. Practice the basketball throw beforehand. It’s an unusual skill that most people don’t have. Do a search here and elsewhere and you’ll find techniques that will help you to improve the distance of your throw. If you don’t pass it, just remember it’s a free attempt. And you’ll know exactly what to work on.

wat if i have a 3.7 gpa and im in the football team. Im a freshman right now so im not a leader in any clubs. i do go to a top 10% school. and Im Korean if it helps. i heard they try to make the school as diverse as possible. and how am i supposed to get the recomendation from the representative or governor? i dont know any of them. too many people in california.
mile 7:52 but i can do better
pull ups: 5
by the way pull ups are rrrrreeeeaaalyyy hard. i way 185 and im only 5 "10 or 6 foot.
and my freshman physical testing i got 70 push up and sit ups. i could do wayy more but that was minimum.
not sure about sprints im a lineman. a right guard actualy.

by the way im 15 so dont be tooo harsh. i got 4 years left to improve.
do u think ill make it? i live 2 miles away from school and i always run home for excersize.

baamonster: If you go to your senators’ and congressman’s websites, you will see a section for either “students” or “constituent services.” This is where you find information on requesting a nomination to the academy. You will not do this until summer/fall of your senior year. Most people who request nominations do not know the MOC. Part of their job is to review the requests, conduct interviews, and make selections. They typically have committees that handle this for them. It is not partisan. You are in a competitive state; therefore, you will need to find ways to stand out among your peers over the next few years to increase your chances of a nomination. Good luck!

You look good, just make sure you can throw the basketball…

One of my instructors who sits on the admissions board said that one kid had nearly a perfect SAT and GPA but couldn’t throw the basketball far enough so he got disqualified and couldn’t come… funny how WP works that way sometimes.

I’d say you’ve got a good shot as long as you nail the rest of the CFA. Talk to your school’s track coach, or someone who throws on track, because the technique is very similar. My friend on track helped me out, and I automatically added some 10, 20 ft to my throw.

USMA tends to do their LoA’s before the other SAs. You can read through the old threads here as well as on the serviceacademyforums.com website regarding USMA and their LoA’s. USMA will send them out early particularly to candidates with very strong academic records. My son received his LoA before the application came online. He did attend USMA SLS. But as you will read here and on serviceacdemyforums.com, the LoA is nice but the appointment is the objective. Just because you don’t get an LoA doesn’t mean you won’t get an appointment and conversely, just because you get an LoA doesn’t guarantee you’ll get an appointment.

John S: Your leadership, athletics, and class rank look good. My advice is to try and improve your SATs. Take the ACT as well. Try to get the best score you can on the CFA - it counts for 10% of your whole candidate score and is worth the effort to do well.
