GPA : 3.37 WGPA : 4.21 SAT : 2230 ACT : 34, I’ve also gotten a 5 on 5/6 of the AP exams I’ve taken
The main reason my GPA is so low is because I got a 2.7 freshman year, but i got straight A’s junior year and have straight A’s this year as well. If I explained this in my essay, could my horrendous freshman year GPA not be counted against me so much? Also I’m taking 4 more AP’s this year so I’ll have 10 AP’s in total.

How competitive is your high school? How many students have been yearly accepted to Hopkins at your school? You seem to have competitive numbers but with the rising amount of applicants numbers now more so than ever numbers are “baseline” factors (of course there are exceptions). You definitely have a chance (Lower for BME), but you have to consider other students applying to Hopkins in your school. If there is another student who also has competitive numbers and relatively “equal” extracurriculars, then the higher GPA student would most likely be accepted (depending on the average number of students that go to Hopkins in your high school). Simply put, be wary of your competition especially those around you and know that you definitely will have a reasonable chance. * Most importantly, in all honesty, I would not write about your GPA improvement for your personal statement (if that is the “essay” you are referring to) because they want to know about you not excuses. However, there is a place in the common app where this would be apparently appropriate if the reason for your lower grades freshman year was a valid concern. Nevertheless, good luck in the admissions process and hopefully we both make it.
Thank you for the reply! My high school is ranked 61st in us news top 100 high schools report. On average my school has about 40-50 applicants to Jhu a year and around 10-12 who get in. However many who get in choose to attend other schools. Would submitting an early decision give me an edge over other applicants?
