Hello!
I will be a junior this fall and I’m already nervous about the SAT’s, AP tests, etc. I REALLY want to go to Carnegie Mellon for computer science so I was just wondering if I have a good chance
GPA between 3.87-3.92
8-9 AP courses all together (one from sophomore year, 3-4 junior year, and 4 senior year)
I plan on taking both ACT’s and SAT’s
I’ve been doing martial arts since I was 11
Be part of 4-6 after school clubs however (sadly) I will be starting most of them next year because both my parents work and I had depression… (not something I want to talk about in a college essay though)
took 2 math courses sophomore year and 2 science courses freshman year
attended a STEM camp at UC Berkeley in spring
I hope I can also get a job soon
Next summer, I REALLY want to go abroad to a foreign country and teach young children English
I volunteer at a shelter and retirement home (4 hours a week, I know- not a lot)
yes I know, I need great tests scores, great recommendations, and an awesome college essay
HONESTLY, what do you guys think???
We need SAT/ACT scores to properly chance you, but as it stands now you don’t show up as a super competitive applicant for CMU CS.
It’s one of the toughest CS programs in the country (if not the toughest), and people from all over will be applying with high stats, high scores, and tons of awards all related to CS. Right now your EC list doesn’t show a huge interest in CS, so it’s worth asking yourself: why do you want to do CS? Do you have experience in it? It’s not a joke, especially at CMU. My brother is graduating this coming year from CMU and he says that TONS of kids drop out of the CS program after freshman year because it’s so difficult. You need a lot of passion to succeed.
Also, being part of 6 clubs is not that impressive without leadership. Better to focus on obtaining a few quality leadership positions than to just attend a bunch of meetings.
You are competing against the brightest students in the world for a relatively few number of slots at CMU. It is a reach for everyone in CS.
Once you have your test scores, work hard on finding matches/likelies at schools that you would really want to attend. If you like CMU, for example, why not also have a look at RIT and CWRU? By all means apply to CMU, but spend your time getting to know other great CS programs that are out there.
