I'm currently a high school junior and already thinking ahead to next year and college. I live in North Carolina and have been thinking about my options for college and I've been seriously considering USC. I have a weighted GPA of about 3.8 and an unweighted GPA of about 3.2. My class rank is 146 of 471. I'm a 3 year member of DECA (i also won a medal at states), I'm in National Honor Society, other school clubs, play recreational sports, and have a job. I have over 100 volunteer hours over the past 3 summers. I'll be a second generation college student (my sister is one year older than me.) I take all honors courses and 1 AP class. I'm looking to major in some type of Business Administration/Sports Management since I someday hope to work in an MLB Front Office or work for the Boston Red Sox. My SAT score the first time I took it was 1500 (I know thats bad) but I plan to take that again and get it up to at least a 1750. I took the ACT but I am waiting for my scores back still. What are my chances of getting in??

USC is getting more competitive and I know that as an out of state student, you prob need higher scores. If you’re shooting for 1750 on all sections, then you may be shooting low. Of course that depends on the sections. I would say to shoot for over 1200 just on Critical Reading/math to be sure. Needless to say, higher is better and might put you in contention for scholarships that offset out of state costs. BUT (and I can’t stress this enough), if you are in NC you aren’t that far away. Take the time to come down and meet with an admission counselor who can tell you what you need to do to be a successful candidate if you really like USC. Any advice from CC is just the opinion or what it was like in prior years, so to be sure go to the source. Hearing that someone from NC got in this year with your stats may not hold true for next year.

Everything that scmom12 said is correct. Your grades are in the ballpark, you just need to fix that SAT (which can be done, I increased my by nearly 200 points between my Jr. yr and Sr. year). You need to start working on that TODAY, ya, I mean like literally today, right this second.

And USC is a great school for what you want to major in.

Why are you still reading this, I told you to get started on improving that SAT score today, that means right now buddy.

What was each individual section of your SAT score?

As far as I know, USC doesn’t use the Writing part of the SAT, so you really want to make sure you get high scores in CR and Math. If you raise your SAT scores, you’d be in good shape.

Also, have you considered trying the ACT? Some people do better on that test. A lot of people say it’s easier. Personally, I did better on the SAT, but a lot of my friends preferred the ACT. And I believe that Carolina only uses the highest scores. They make you submit everything, though.

To put it into numbers, NC represents 9% of the freshman class and the average SAT score for OOS students is a 1238. You will probably need to be near or above the SAT average since you are coming from a state with a lot of applicants. I think everything else looks good, so the biggest way to improve your chances are by knocking it out of the park on the SAT. Like imagep said, you can definitely raise your score by taking one of the classes or following the SAT books. Repetition is key with the SAT, so work on that as best you can and I think you should have a good shot.

I’m from NJ and got accepted with a 3.43 weighted gpa, and an 1170/1600 on my sats, 1730/2400. I also had a bunch of leadership, in clubs, sports, and in the community. I got accepted into the Moore school of business. I dont know if I was lucky, or I had the right marks, I also applied early action I don’t know if that may help too!

Thanks everyone! You guys gave me a lot of information that will be very useful to me. I really appreciate it. I definitely will get my SAT Score up! Any tips for that??

Take it multiple times. Mine took it for the last time in fall of senior year. You can probably get it in at least twice. If you have to focus on one section, pick the one with lowest score since USC (and most) superscore. Do lots of practice test. If you can identify specific weakness, such as geometry or algebra, maybe get extra help. If you school has free after school tutoring do it for algebra and geometry (even if past those classes) since that’s the level the SATs cover.

Personally, I think that math is the easiest one to improve on, because it’s more concrete, but you might think differently.

Critical Reading can be improved by understanding analysis terminology and definitions of words. That can take a lot of time to get that all memorized.

Math can be improved just by practicing the math types of problems over and over again.

You need to pull up your GPA, because I had an uw GPA of 3.5 and was recently rejected and the school is just getting more competitive.

@theseltalover, what was your weighted GPA and did you apply for early decision?
