please help!
Hopefully you’ve applied to some safety schools that you would be happy to attend if it comes down to it.
If you get in then great but it is always good to have a backup plan.
@raclut I’ve applied to some safeties yeah but I really want to get into UVa.
.
Hang in there. Just a couple more weeks.
the percentage of student getting admitted after deferral is very slim. most public schools deferral means denied in 2nd round, unless they school wants to see your midterm grades. midyears are the only supplementary information the schools will look at
but you do have good stats, if you applied to CAS, you for sure should have been admitted
I’m surprised you didn’t get in as well. My D has a number of similar stats and did just get into CAS, so the engineering part could definitely be a factor.
I don’t know if reliable stats on admits after defers are available. I thought I read somewhere that around 20% did get in, and that would include IS and OOS, so in-state might be somewhat higher than the overall number.
So chances might not be as low as the “very slim” mentioned above, but they probably are a good bit less than the nearly 50% for instate acceptances in the EA round. Still, I’d think you must have been pretty close, and should have a chance this time around.
My daughter got in as instate after being deferred early action. It does happen so don’t lose hope. The best thing you can do is get your grades up as much as possible. Good luck!
@mom23travelers hey, congrats to your daughter! Did she have similar stats as me? What do you think put her over the edge after getting deferred?
@Wilson98 yeah, I did read that deferrals just get considered along with all of the regular decision applicants, so I kind of look at it as a “second chance”. I also read that the in state rate is indeed higher, even for deferrals (which is why I’m optimistic).
I think my app was pretty good, especially since I got deferred, not rejected. I just had really poor first semester junior year grades (which I explained in my common app essay).
I really wish I applied to CAS though. If there was a chance to transfer now, I’d definitely go for it.
@aaronhou2598 thanks! On UVa’s website for deferrals, they just said they would like to see the mid year report. I’ve maintained all A’s and B’s, my rank stayed the same (as 1), and my GPA went up.
I am also planning on emailing the admissions office my accomplishments after the app had been submitted.
- 2nd place at conferences (academic team, captain)
- 4th place at regionals (academic team, captain)
- 2nd place at districts (DECA)
I also completely forgot to put the fact that I did band for 7 years, and was section leader for 5 of those years, on my app the first time. I’ll email them that too.
I’m hoping they just want to see continued “excellence”.
Are we allowed to email the admissions office on updates on our EC’s? Since it’s been a few months since I submitted the early action application I’d really like to tell them about what I achieved since then (new internships, promotion to editor, etc).
@exoheat11 Her stats were much lower than yours. In her case, her GPA and course rigor were artificially low for her graduating high school due to the fact that we moved in the middle of her high school years. She took a very demanding course her senior year and I suspect they wanted to see her mid-year grades to make sure she aced them. She did, and she got in.
I know it is so hard to wait and I wish you the best. For what it is worth given my daughter’s case and that of many of her friends that I have talked to, I really do believe the UVA admissions office when they say that they do holistic admissions. Some schools are all about the numbers and keeping those admissions stats high. I have seen lots of evidence that UVA really is looking at the whole person and trying to create the ideal class. Unfortunately the demand means that lots of highly qualified, great people don’t make it in each year. Thankfully there are lots of other great school both in Virginia and elsewhere. I’m sure with your incredible qualifications you will land at a great school, especially if you choose to embrace that school wholeheartedly.

“Other than midyear grade updates or new standardized test results, we will not be able to review any edits to your application or additional information. Please do not send additional information, including recommendations, during this time.”
@mom23travelers did she apply to engineering or CAS?
CAS, which is definitely easier to get into.
@mom23travelers that makes me feel kind of better haha. Do you think I still have a good shot at engineering?
@exoheat11 I think you have a good chance but nothing is ever certain, especially at top level schools. Unfortunately there are many well qualified students who have to be turned away, especially in a hot field like engineering. My best advice is to not give up on UVA but also get excited about your other possibilities. There are lots of great schools out there and the best school for you is that one that accepts you and you decide to make the best place for the next four years of your life.
