What Are my chances of getting into Andover or Boston University Academy?

I'm a sophmore in high school and I will be applying for the 11th grade(will enter as a 10th grader if it means acceptance). I will need a majority of the costs paid for by financial aid.

All through out Middle School I had all A's and only a single B+. My freshmen year was not my best academic year however I stepping it up this year. My weighted GPA is around 4.3 and my unweighted GPA is around 3.7.

Freshmen year final year grades: No AP classes offered
Computer Applications-- A+
Geometry Honors-- B
Intensive English-- A+
World History Honors-- A
Intensive French II-- A
Earth Science Honors-- C+
Ceramics-- A-
Intro to Art-- A-
Physical Education-- A
**The earth science teacher's style of teaching was not reasonable and the class size decreased from 33 to 16 due to people dropping out. The class average was very low at only a B-. All her previous classes were the same way, and she is no longer "allowed" to teach the honors class.

Current sophmore grades: Only 1 AP course offered
Health-- A
International Relations Honors--- A-
Intensive Biology-- A+ (unable to take honors due to scheduling conflicts)
Intensive English-- A-
AP Early US History-- B-
French III Intensive-- A-

I have not taken the SSAT yet, and my personal reccomendations have been close to flawless( teacher showed me them before sealing the envelope)
If I do well on my SSAT will I have a chance of acceptance at either of these schools?

-Thanks

**I am stepping it up

While I have no idea about your chances with Andover, if you have questions you’d like to ask a BUA student anonymously ask away. (I’m a freshman this year. Just went through the application process myself. I feel your pain) Personally, I didn’t have any of the sports time you’ve clocked. Are you coming to visit?

Yeah I’m doing a campus tour and interview on Tuesday, I might shadow if i like it after that( not sure yet). So how are the teachers and classes at BUA? Class choices? Thanks, Maybe i will unknowingly see you when I go haha xD.

Your stats are good. You may need a few more academic-based extracurricular activities/awards/etc., but your athletic commitment is really impressive, I find it amazing how you do so many sports at once. Definitely talk to the athletic coaches.

@intrinsically Thank you. My school does not offer that many academic-based extracurriculars haha

Hi Ninja168!
I highly recommend doing a shadow day if you can. It really helps kids figure out if they like BUA. Coming in at 11th grade is difficult, because 11th graders take BU courses which you may not be ready for. But if you are willing to enter as a 10th grader, I think you will have a good shot there. I see you are a math team co-captain - BUA is very strong in math competitions and is always looking for kids who are interested in math competitions - and who can help organize the team.
Best of luck!

While I just realized you’re in 11th grade by reading nemom’s post (really observant, aren’t I?) so I can’t really tell you much about the teachers you’ll have, I would agree with nemom that shadow days are a good way to figure out the school. It was the revisit day after my acceptance that made me choose BUA. I found the atmosphere really welcoming, and the people were genuinely interested in me. We have a great cafeteria… :)

Hi! I’m applying to BUA for ninth grade. Is there any way I could pm you about the application process too, Bookworm?

Totally! I’m not on here much, but I’ll try to check- I remember I was totally freaked out while applying to schools…

I got my SSAT scores back I got:
Verbal: 752
Math: 794
Reading: 698
Total: 2244 (92%)
Lol

uhh… this might be a stupid question, but what is an “intensive” course and how does it compare to an honors course?

The levels at my school go unleveled, transitive, comprehensive, intensive, Honors, AP. Basically comprehensive is for people who will most likely go to 2 year college or maybe a 4 year. Intensive is mainly 4 year colleges. Honors and AP are self explanatory.

Your changes for BUA are unfortunately not good. It isn’t personal, you have great qualifications - their loss - it’s that they don’t take transfer students. They say that they do but the statistics prove otherwise. For Junior year they took exactly zero of the eight transfer students who applied. The sad part is they recruit and are chirpy and enthusiastic on the phone. I don’t know what their game is all about.

You don’t have a good shot. It’s because they like to have a few years to groom their kids as they advance in the grades. it’s practically impossible to transfer into BUA. They will try to get you to apply though, they seem to tell everyone to go for it.

I am a senior at BUA. They rarely take people in the 11th grade and those they do take often have a hard time. Most of those they take would normally be in 12th grade but stay back a year to get in. That said, a good friend of mine got accepted for the 11th grade without having to stay back a year. There is usually one person accepted for the 11th grade, if any. 10th grade accepts two to five or so.

I cannot really tell you your chances. One good thing is you seem to be on track for math because you need calc I to graduate from BUA. A lot of what BUA looks for is a love for learning, passion for what you love, and nerdiness. Nerdiness definitely seems to be a bonus for admissions. Most BUA students wear the title of nerd as a badge of honor although there are certainly some who are less nerdy.

Definitely be sure you like the environment. Admissions seems to look for a good fit for applicants more than almost anything.

Let me know if you have any questions.
