These are my 3 top choices for colleges (in that order).

I am a high school student at the top ranked school in NE. My class is incredibly competitive for a mid-west high school. There are about 570 kids in my class, but as of now, I am ranked at about 100. My unweighted GPA is a 3.9, and I have taken AP and IB classes. It should also be noted that my school does not weigh honors classes (which I have also taken). My grades aren't that great, but I am heavily involved. My stats:

-International Baccalaureate and IB Middle Years Diplomas
-3 AP courses, 14 IB classes
-3 years cross country, 2 years varsity swim team, 4 years track
-Clubs: President of FCCLA (volunteering club), member of Amnesty International, Volunteers in Action, Diversity club, and PALS (a group that integrates with the special education teens)
-Volunteer activities (about 2-4 hours a week) Leukemia and Lymphoma Team in Training, IncluCity, Children's hospital, Make a Wish Representative, Angels Among Us, Relay for Life
-Co Founded a Fundraiser: Fashion show to benefit the American Heart Assoc.
-Peer mediator, member of student council

Please help me!!! :)

while most top LAC’s will consider the fact that you’ve taken AP and IB classes, Brown will want to see that you’ve SUCCEEDED in them. You say you have a 3.9 gpa, but that your grades ‘aren’t that great’- so I’m a little confused. Also, you don’t have your SAT scores here, and as much as people don’t want to admit it- the sat’s DO COUNT. for ALOT. I know people with utterly abysmal grades but fabulous SAT scores and extracurriculars (going to a 3rd world country, etc) who get in to places like Brown.

In my opinion Brown should always be considered a reach school no matter HOW fabulous your stats are. You probably have the best chance at tufts, followed by Vassar, then Brown. If there’s anything you can do to get your grades up, do it.

Thanks for your help. I’m hoping to expand my current stats by senior year as to have a better chance, so thanks a lot!

Ah, you’re a junior!! Oh, to be young.

Definitely take an SAT prep class, boost your grades as best you can, and continue your leadership extracurriculars.

Any other thoughts on this? Anyone??

Can you compete in athletics in college in your sport? Vassar and Tufts, being D3, might be willing to look more closely at your attributes if you are a decent runner/swimmer. It is just another way to distinguish yourself from others with similar stats. Brown is D1, so you’d have to be a state qualifier to be interesting to them.
Look at the times on the websites of Vassar and Tufts, see if tyou look comparable, and fill out the recruiting form…
If you crack 700s on your SATs, or 30 on the ACT, I think you look good.

I know there are students who were waitlisted at Tufts that were accepted at Brown this year. Tufts says they look holistically at a students application. Your essay will need to be outstanding and grab admissions attention. You should shoot for a score of above 700 on each section of SAT. Community service, work experience or other experiences outside of school are super important. You will need to have your own unique “voice” to be accepted at Tufts. This is just a Tufts Mom opionion… for whatever it’s worth.

wow! thats really different… i always thought that brown always searched for candidates who stood out as “rounded students” rather than just grades like the other ivies… but thanks

i know this sounds awful, but what’s your gender and race? i know vassar has been trying to up enrollment of multicultural students, and i’ve been told it’s easier to get into the school if you’re a male than a female.

ASIAN!! (haha) and yes, I am unfortunately female. but oh well :P

vassar is really hard, sometimes even more competitive than top tier ivy league universities.

oh jeez… looking back i made an error. my WEIGHTED gpa is a 3.9. thats why i said my grades were low. now do i have a lower chance?

i sound just like you, reading your stats. we did all the same things, but my gpa was a 4.1. I didn’t apply to brown, but i did apply to vassar and tufts. i got a ton of money from vassar, but only wait listed at tufts. needless to say, i did not stay on the waiting list, but i found it interesting since tufts was not the most prestigious college on my list, and yet i got in to almost every other school. except tufts. im happy i chose vassar and am very excited for the fall, but the point is, you can never really tell with these people. just look at the accepted/denied/wait listed thread for vassar. so many amazing students (supposedly) got denied. hard to tell, but good luck!
