What are my chances of getting into Ivies, Stanford, etc.?

I am just debating on whether or not I want it would be better to take the SAT again and superscore or just do the ACT because I don’t know how much higher I can get my reading and writing but also I don’t know if I should start all over with the ACT. And I have pretty much exhausted all testing material for the SAT.

If you are taking AP exams, you may still have a chance to fill out the bubble or even any of the other tests.

Take your ACT and if you score 34 or more, hide your SAT scores if dont want to retake.
Have you taken any AP exams yet? What about your SAT IIs?
If you are spending sometime on Stanford campus, go attend their tours, info sessions etc. You may also want to talk to them privately to see where you stack up. This way a bunch of people are not just guessing for you but some professionals can tell you if you have a chance. I have seen some excellent candidates (on paper anyway) be rejected outright in EA because they dont put a lot of people on weightlist unlike Yale.

I haven’t taken any AP Exams or SAT IIs yet but I am going to take Spanish, Math II, Chemistry, and possibly Biology

Read the results threads and make up your own mind re your chances, and the things you can most reasonably do to improve them. Other peoples’ opinions don’t much matter. But make sure you apply to a wide range of schools–no one wants to be left standing when musical chairs stops.

One other thing you should probably do is make a music tape and ask some professionals to give you feedback (like one of the university profs in a major music school). If you are considered really good, that can be your hook. You did not mention any state awards for track but if you see your timings comparable to people in ivy league, you should contact their coaches. The coaches can get you in before the general admission round but you should be talking to them in summer.

okay, and as for EC’s are there any things that I should be doing in order to make them look better? any other things/programs that I can do?

Find something to do in summer that takes 4-6 weeks. Serious volunteer work (dont go just spend 8 hours at a hospital - that does nt give you an edge), a job or research.

It sounds like all your Cello work is part of orchestra. Can you line up any individual performances, play somewhere important enough?

ya i think i can do that, and I have had master classes with Antonio Lysy (a really well-known esteemed cellist) if that helps at all

you do not have like any significant EC’s that show much of anything

BernieMadoff^that is why I am asking for help to see if there are any others I can do or go further in the ones that I already have

People I still need help! Don’t let this thread die!!

Chance some other people, it’s a good way to get your name out there. It’s how I got a bunch of responses on my thread.

Start with mine…

BUMP bump bump

You have a chance.

BUmpdiBUmp

super bump!

Yes, you will have an advantage as a male applying to east coast LACs, Swarthmore and Amherst more than Williams because Williams attracts a lot of math majors (and outdoorsy types). They should be part of your application mix, but don’t count on them as being easy admits.

Thank you! BUMP

creepy… I want to get into neuroscience too! does anyone on here go on TED? platypus26 you should really watch this, its really interesting

[Aditi Shankardass: A second opinion on learning disorders | Video on TED.com](http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/aditi_shankardass_a_second_opinion_on_learning_disorders.html)

soo back to you…
you definitely have a chance at all of those schools, a good essay topic could be intertwining your love for music and neuroscience together. like how you’ve observed autistic children playing the cello? im not sure, just a suggestion :)

also, i don’t really know much about music, but to me your touring experience with an orchestra seems incredibly impressive, id DEFINITELY send in a video

good luck!! I think it all comes down to how you’re going to present yourself as the whole package, you definitely have a shot :)

Stanford - reach
Colombia - in if you have a passport
Columbia - reach
Amherst - low reach
NYU - low reach
Pomona College - low reach
Northwestern- low reach

In general, you have an okay shot, but it will be tough.
Your SAT is fairly weak. ACT should be 33 or 34 at least for the top schools, with a 2300 SAT. Are you an URM?

I LOVE TED

Chance meh: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1120270-preemptive-chance.html</a></p>

Take a look at this year’s acceptances to those colleges. That should give you an idea of where you stand. Make sure to choose some matches and safeties, because a lot of people this year needed them.
