I'm a high school senior and I really want to get into Michigan State. Freshmen year I was not the best student. Due to depression I was not the most outgoing student so I did not participate in any activates such as sports and clubs. Also my grades where not in the best shape. I ended that year with 2.9 GPA. On the other side the next 3 years my grades have been in great shape, i got on the honor roll, I joined 2 clubs, and I played varsity tennis. My cumulative GPA is now a 3.888. So when I did apply to Michigan state they sent me a message saying that they are considering me but I need to send in the CAAP application form and 12th grade first semester transcript. Also my ACT score was a 18. I'm just curious to know what are my chances. I hear stories about people with similar GPA's and ACT scores like me that have got in.

One more thing, when I was filling out my application I said that I can speak 2 languages, and my cultural background. Does that make any difference to my application?

When I applied when I was in HS I had 3.1 GPA, 23 ACT score and they requested more info from me. Now, I did not get in because of the extremely high acceptance rate (I’m applying to transfer now, though.) Having such a high GPA of 3.88 is going to help a LOT. So will your cultural background (you’re unique). Just make sure your essay is strong and highlights your struggles and your unique upbringing. They are looking for diversity and interesting perspectives. Your ACT could be better but your high GPA kind of helps balance that out. If you don’t live too far from MSU, you might try to make an appointment with an Admissions counselor. That’s what I did and I made a strong impression and she said she would vouch for me (again, that was 2011 and the acceptance rate was crazy high so they had to reject a lot a lot of people). Any year before 2011 I would have gotten in. I think your app is stronger than mine was (with the high GPA + languages) There’s just no way to know for sure.

Normally I’d say almost zilch but since they’re requesting CAAP from you, you might be a special admit to the U. Basically, if accepted, it means they’re taking a chance and you’ll receive special support.
