I’m currently a second-semester freshman attending school overseas at the University of Utah Asia Campus located in South Korea (the school offers the same degree and credentials as the regular University of Utah, just a different location).
I am hoping to transfer to NYU for the Spring 2020 semester but would like some of you to evaluate my chances of getting in!
My goal is to apply to the College of Arts & Science and major in Romance Studies, I’m currently majoring in Psychology at my school.
High School GPA Weighted: 4.07
High School GPA Unweighted: 3.8~3.9
SAT Score: 1250 (I know it’s pretty bad for this school, ah!!!)
AP Tests: I’ve taken 5 total AP classes/Exams and have only received a 5 in AP German.
The others I took were AP Biology, Statistics, US History, and Literature, I received a 3 in all of them. (Looking bad so far, I know!!)
Graduated 7 in my class out of a graduating class of 80 people.
Current College GPA: 4.0
Credits Completed: 15
Credits In-progress: 12
Since I would be applying in Spring 2020, I would likely do another 15 credits before transferring schools.
My school accepted most of my AP Credit, so according to them I have 30 credits currently, but I’m guessing NYU wouldn’t accept it so I’m not sure if I should list that here.
What I’m hoping will help set me apart is my background with diverse cultures.
My mother is of Turkish and Iranian descent, my father of Angolan/Afro-Brazilian. I was raised in Germany and didn’t learn English until around 6 years old. I lived in Germany until I was 8, then I moved to the US and now have US Citizenship.
Since January 2016, I have been living in South Korea on the military base in Pyeongtaek.
I have spent approximately 3 years studying Korean (1 year independently and 2 years alongside a tutor). The focus of most of my interests has always been language, so I am truly hoping that that will make a difference!
Extracurriculars:
Currently the Psychology Major Representative (Communicate between students in the Psychology Major & Student Council and plan events)
Involved in multiple clubs at school (LGBTQ representation club, a musical club for street performances and Psychological research club).
Created a psychology buddy program at my school to increase interaction between freshmen and upperclassmen.
Spent time during High School volunteering at the local kindergarten, helped students complete their assignments and “tutored.”
I want to transfer due to some health issues that make it hard for me to receive care living overseas. In addition, I would like to live closer to my mother (who currently lives in DC).
So what do you think? I know it’s not a particularly impressive application compared to all of the other students that apply there, but do you think there is ANY chance I could get in?
