I am going to be a Senior next year. My current weighted gpa is 3.452 and my most recent ACT score is 26. I am planning to take the act 2 more times. I have toke 3 ap classes my junior year and I am planning to take 4 next year. As for my extra curricula’s, i am in chess club and playyed football for 2 years and tennis for one, but, not at the varsity level. With this, could i possibly get into Rutgers or Virginia tech, or possibly, nyc?
What do you mean by nyc? CUNY? Or NYU? In any case, Virginia Tech looks like a big reach unless you can raise that ACT to about a 32. Rutgers, I’m not too sure about. Probably a high match, although I may be overestimating its selectivity.
For Rutgers your chance is about 60%. For Virginia Tech about 70%.
NYC. And for Rutgers: New New brunswick
@dhower just wondering, why does you opinion differ from gormar099?
@gomar099 sorry, nyu
Those are the acceptance rates for those schools. So there is a 40-30% chance of your being denied acceptance. Gormar is right about your ACT score, you might want to get some study books and retake it or take the SAT and see how you fair. Also, when you apply make sure that you triple check your essays for grammatical errors and sentence structuring. Perhaps have an English instructor help you. Start preparing your application as early as possible, and do your best to raise your GPA. High School GPA is evaluated with a higher standard than community college transfers since the coursework is often less rigorous. Universities want to see that you are a leader with entrepreneurial spirit and determination. You’ll want to do everything you can to convey that in your application. If you have a dream school, show them in your essays how you have an academic need to be at their university over whichever is closest to your home. For example: Rutgers has a very renowned philosophy program. I have a great interest in that field and I feel that the academic challenge provided by their program would be highly beneficial to me. That’s kind of a lazy example, but I hope you get the idea. You want them to see that only Rutgers is the best choice for you, or Virginia Tech, or NYU, or wherever else you apply. Good luck

@dhower I love philosophy as well! It has been a passion of mine as long as i can remember. That is why i am planning to major in it; that and computer engineering. In my Ap lang. class next year we are going to take the first semester to write our college applications. Thank you!
@gormar099 Virginia Tech’s ACT range is 24-29 (25%-75%) with an average of 27. Why do you think OP needs to get a 32? I’m just curious because my son will be applying this fall and he’s studying for the ACT now. Thanks.
@STEM2017 It’s just a recommendation. Getting a 32 or so would really help him out, especially since a 3.4 gpa weighted is like, what, a 2.9 uw? That’s probably pretty low for tech (not sure what the avg is off the top of my head), so it would help balance his gpa. He doesn’t NEED a 32 to get in, it would just make his app much stronger.
@gormar099 understood. Makes sense. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something, thanks.
Okay, so I don’t know much about the other schools, but I do know a good amount about Virginia Tech. One: test scores aren’t the most important thing to them. I would honestly say that one’s Gpa and essay responses are the most important.
Two: If you want to get into Virginia Tech for engineering, good luck. The lowest gpa I saw being accepted this year to VT was a 3.8 and she was only majoring in history. I know plenty of people who were denied acceptance into their engineering program. So with your gpa, you should hope that their isn’t much competition next year or that you write bombing essays.
I’m not trying to be mean, but I’m just trying to give you the truth. It gets harder and harder every year to get into Virginia Tech and I’m saying everything from my own personal experience and from things I’ve heard from staff at Tech. They look at everything there, but they like to see hard work and intuitive and just caring down to earth people.
Ps. Also, if you really want to get in to VT, then community service is the way to go. They are very big on giving back, so big that it’s their motto. They want students who will give back to their community, like the college does.
Thank u:)
Is it reall a 2.9?
I had one really bad grade, which was a D+ that brought me down. I had an A-, A, B- and B-, in my Ap classes
the UW gpa depends on how many honors and APs you took and if you school doesn’t already do it for you need to find a gpa calculator and do it yourself but it might not be as low as a 2.9. For rutgers if you are in state you have a pretty good chance but out of state your chance is less (not impossible) and you might get admitted to newark or camden instead. VT it depends on your major. Engineering is definitely a reach and your GPA is a bit low. NYU is a reach.
Thank u for responding. I have taken 3 ap and 1 honor. I live in oh
If i were goin into computer scienc how would i far e
