What are my chances of getting into San Diego State?

I am a senior in high school in Virginia. I have a GPA weighted of a 3.53. I took AP and hard classes mostly. I have an SAT of 1160. My whole family is in San Diego and I have hopes of moving back, but I feel like San Diego State is a stretch for me. I wish the application included essays or activities, because I was considerably well-rounded throughout high school. Please tell me I have a chance!

Probably not but, it is worth a shot.
SDSU uses a pretty simple formula to rank applicants. It simply combines your SAT and GPA from academic courses in grades 10 and 11. ECs play no role at all. With a 3.5 and 1160, your index would be 3960. Out of state applicants generally need to be well over 4100.

University of San Diego and Loyola Marymount are SoCal privates that are probably in you reach.

Good luck.

Thank you so much! What do you think about CalState Long Beach? or UC Merced?

UC Merced and Cal state Long Beach are both possible but SDSU will be tough. Definitely worth an application but you might also want to consider Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Fullerton depending upon intended major.

Thank you so much! Is me being in Virginia going to decrease my chances quite a bit?

My daughter has slightly better stats and in CA resident. What is the index for CA residents at SDSU?

Being OOS should not hinder your chance since the Cal States are always in need of the extra tuition paid by OOS students however, geographic location is considered in admissions since local applicants are given priority. You are a very qualified applicant and Good Luck.

There is no published Eligibility index for CA residents vs OOS residents. The “unofficial” EI threshold has been around 4100 for SAT/ 1000 ACT for all majors except Nursing. Local in-service area residents get priority and I have seen EI’s as low as 3950+/900+ accepted in the past few years. As the number of applications increase, I am sure the EI will continue to increase also.

Thank you so much for all your help! I really appreciate it!

OOS tuition is really tough to rationalize for CSULB and UCM - that’s why I pointed to a couple of private schools. They charge a similar amount (in many cases less) and deliver a private school experience - smaller class sizes, better access to professors, etc.

I appreciate that so much! Thank you.

@collegequestions787383 Did you get accepted? I got accepted as an OOS in December with a 3.4-3.5 CSU GPA and 24 Act score.
