What are my chances of getting into the University of Michigan?

Hello there! I am a high school junior who recently took the PSAT. Although I consider myself to be an above average student, I didn’t do so hot on he PSAT. I scored a 1130 out of 1600… Yikes. I’ve never been a good test taker, partially because I have anxiety problems and also because I tend to trip myself up on questions or not finish on time. That being said, I am planning on studying like a madwoman to raise my score. Lately I’ve been looking at the University of Michigan, and although my PSAT is not adequate for this school I am going to raise it (hopefully). I’d like to know what my chances are of getting into this school, considering my PSAT (which I’ll hopefully raise by a lot for the SAT) and the information provided below.

Also, I go to an arts school in a big city and I don’t get home until 6pm or later on most days. When I’m in a show I don’t get home until around 8-10pm. The school day is 8am-5pm but with public transportation at that time it takes longer to get home. That’s why I only took on one AP class, I didn’t want to stress myself out too much. I will however be taking 2 or more AP classes next year. That’s also why my extracurricular activities aren’t very diverse, since I’m at an arts school there are no sports or many clubs because of the late dismissal.

So yeah, there’s probably more I can add but with this information what are my chances of getting into UMich?

Test scores will be important. While everything else looks roughly on-track, although your course rigor is a little low (for reasons beyond your control or not,) a lot will hinge on what you do grade-wise for the rest of HS and how much you can bump that SAT. To be really competitive at Umich, you’ll want a 1400+ on the SAT, and of course higher is always better. Your PSAT won’t actually really influence anything, aside from meaning you don’t get national merit, but you’ve got some time to study for the SAT. Do some prep work, there are a lot of good prep sites out there. Also try to take a little more leadership in club, if at all possible… while maybe it’s not as relevant for theatre-y things, it’s always good to have. Good luck.

Are you in state or out if state.

Try SAT and ACT Ave see which you test better with. People sometimes score differently on them.

the PSAT is out of 1520 not 1600
