Contemplating on what to write on essay:
Probably going to write on original Existential philosophy obtained during freshman year and how I changed as A person since then and seek the best in myself and others.
About 50% is based on academics, with GPA and class rigor being most important (as well as that essay!), and then test scores being slightly less important. It will help if you can get your GPA up a bit higher (good luck on those two classes), as well as your test scores. Your class ranking is a little low (73% of enrolled freshman where in the top 10% of their class), but UF will consider how competitive your in-state HS when considering your rank.
The other 50% is based on non-academic factors, like extracurricular activities, volunteer work, regular work, etc. Here you are doing great. Keep up the great work and make sure you capture it in your applications.
Based on how well you did on your second SAT (and your essay, remember it’s important), UF can be a “match”. However, holistic admissions can seem random at times.
Ok, thank you so much! Not sure if you’re reading this but do you know if it would make a difference if someone applied for the summer term instead of fall term, when considering chances?
It is my understanding with UF, it doesn’t matter what term you apply for. It is not easier to get in if you apply for summer. I would like to see others comment on this.
Is the 4.21 your UF (SUS) weighted GPA? It’s best to figure that for the best comparison. I would suggest taking a hard look at the SAT results and try to find areas of improvement, study them and then take it again. You really want to be in the high 1200s if possible. (If you are a Florida resident, you will need a 1290 to qualify for full bright futures, which will be any Florida state school.)
Spend time on the application and the essay and make sure you go on the official tour.
UF says it doesn’t matter if you apply for Summer or Fall – not sure I believe it.
@Parman37@GatorDad305 the State University System (SUS) of Florida puts out an admissions tour MATRIX that list acceptance rate and stats by Summer and Fall. You can find the link to the excel spreadsheet below:
UF 2017:
Acceptance rate: 40% Summer/40% Fall
Mid Range Accepted GPA: 4.3-4.6 Summer/ 4.3-4.6 Fall
Middle Range New SAT: Fall: RW 630-710, M 640-730
Middle Range ACT:Summer Comp 28-32; Fall Comp 28-32
It’s clear that the Fall and Summer terms have the same GPA and test score ranges.
You’ll notice that this is VERY different from the other Public Universities.
If we go back to 2013, we do see a slight difference between Summer and Fall.
Acceptance rate: 46% Summer, 44% Fall
Mid Range GPA: 3.9-4.3 Summer, 4.1-4.5 Fall
MId Range ACT: 25-30 Summer, 28-32 Fall
UF may have changed the method they used to allocate students to Summer B vs Fall, since 2013.
Bottom line, there may be a slight admissions advantage to applying to Summer B, while at the other 11 public universities, it’s a significant advantage.
Thanks, @Gator88NE. I have seen the matrix and the stats and I think your analysis is correct. My question, though, is why are some kids placed in summer and other place in fall? Is it random? There has to be some statistical difference, don’t you think? ( I know it is a finer, nuanced point, but it makes me wonder.)
@GatorDad305 I always thought the kids on the lower end of the admission stat range were being offered summer term or those that thought they had a better chance to be accepted had selected the summer term. But that doesn’t appear to be the case based on the stats.
@Gator88NE When my son goes on his tour, I will ask the question of someone at admissions. It may be that we are talking about a less than .1 difference in GPA between summer/fall. It becomes significant when you start analyzing a pool of 40,000 applicants. For example, the bottom of the middle range for summer might be 4.25 (rounded up to 4.3) and Fall might be 4.34 (rounded down to 4.3). I’m sure admissions is looking at GPAs rounded to at least two decimal places. I will ask, likely to the horror of my son.
