Summer vs Fall Chances @ UF

UF is pretty much my dream school, I would take it over an Ivy League any day. My father graduated from there and I would really like to continue the UF legacy; however, the question is... will I have a greater chance of getting into UF if I shoot for Summer, or can I make the cut for Fall?

I have a 3.71 HS GPA, a 4.6 HPA, and a 4.4 recalculated GPA. Unfortunately I feel I did poorly on my SAT's, receiving a 1820 after multiple attempts (although it is in the Summer session average acceptance range). I did take the ACT; however I received a 25, which is not as good as my SAT score.

I am part of the Academic team at my school (2 years running) and competed on two game-shows both years as part of the Academic team. I am a member of multiple honor societies (5) and I am currently in the top 5% of my class (37/724). Also I recently got accepted to the UF SSTP (Student Science and Technical Program) where I stayed there for 7 weeks and took classes along with completing lab work, I receiving 6 credit hours and got A's in both classes (4.00 @ UF currently). I only worry because I know of one kid that attended it (class rank 76) and did not get accepted. I am also a member of the Marching and Concert Band (3yrs) and have numerous hours doing Missions work with my church in foreign countries (6+ yrs).

I am a Senior and plan to apply Sept. 3 when applications open. Seriously if I don't get into this school I will cry like a little girl.

I take multiple AP classes per year and will have completed 9 AP classes and 1 AICE, along with 2 semesters of dual enrollment.

I am a Florida high school student. I was on a robotics team where we built and programmed our robot from scratch, competing in multiple competitions and places 3rd in state. I also am an avid Mountain biker and ride often just for the thrills and strenuous exercise (plus Gainesville has the best trails ;) )

For community service, I would say I am average with probably total of 130 hours. The only difference is that as I said earlier it is from missions work in third world countries (id est building houses, cleaning up communities, caring for sick and elderly people, and interacting with underprivileged children).

The question remains, go for Summer and get in, or shoot for Fall and possibly get in? Or do you think I have a good chance of making Fall?

Thank You,
Svengali95

Svengali95,

When you mean Summer, are you talking about Innovation Academy (IA)? If not, UF will say (the “official” line) your chances are not any better asking for Summer vs. Fall. If we’re talking IA, then you do have a better chance, based on taking advantage of the greater number of slots available to IA folks (normal admissions + IA admissions).

If you’re an Engineering major, you could also be invited to participate in the Gator Engineering @Santa Fe (GE@SF) Program. In this program, by your 2nd semester (Spring) you would be a UF student, though you still have to complete your AA at Santa Fe, before moving to UF. Note that those AP classes should help speed up the process (to finish up at Santa Fe).

Otherwise, your GPA is great and UF puts more weight on GPA that test scores. Your SAT is a little low, you should think about taking it one last time in October or November. Remember that UF does super score the test, so all you need to do is improve in one area to raise your overall score.

The middle 50% of admitted students (2012) scored between 1810 to 2080. You’re within this range, but any improvements on your part would increase your chances.

Otherwise your a “high match” to Match, however, with UF’s it’s always iffy. Please be sure to pick a few safeties, just in case. You can always transfer to UF! About a 1/3 to 1/4 of students are transfer students.

Good Luck!

Thank you Gator88NE for your detailed reply.

Yes, I do know that the standard university response is that an applicants chances are no higher; however I beleive and most people know that this is nonsense. I have spoken with multiple guidance counsellors, teachers and even professors at UF who have stated otherwise. Even the director of CPET (dual enroll) @ UF told students that summer session is just easier to get into.

Thanks again, looking forward to more replies

Bump.

What?!? are you questioning the official party line? You’re such a rebel… :)

I’m afraid no one can tell you how much of an advantage applying for summer will be. However, UF does have some nice programs setup for incoming engineers, for the summer term, that preps them for the program.

If you’re concerned, go ahead and apply for summer. It can’t hurt. :P

Over the last few years, UF has done several experiments with admitting freshmen students in the Summer and Spring, vs. the Fall, as a way to increase the number of admitted students. You could very well find yourself accepted, but for the Spring term, even if you apply for summer. Admissions keeps the plan for 2013-2014 under wraps…until invites go out. Not worth worrying about :)

Good Luck!

Thank you again for the response!

I do not plan on majoring in engineering, rather a B.S. in Bio-medicine, from there I plan on applying to UF’s dental school.

bump.

Looking for some more chances.
bump.

Lets put aside the summer question, since none of us can really answer it…

Overall you have a solid chance (match) at UF. You’re GPA and ECs (work on that Essay!) are more than good enough. You’re SAT is a little low (you did super score it?), and that would be your only concern (that and UF is sometimes a bit random with it’s holistic admissions process). You have time to take the SAT again, but only do so if you have time to study for it and think you have a decent shoot at improving it, otherwise it’s a waste of time, money, and worry.

UF does put more weight on GPA and class rigor, than SAT scores.

Good Luck!

PS: Make sure you double check your SAR. You don’t want to be accepted by UF, only to have the offer rescinded because of a typo when inputting your grades. :)
