What are my chances of getting into UMCP and UMBC?
Due to a sickness I kinda missed the bulk of my junior year and I can't repeat it because the school won't let me. So I have a gap in my transcript, but I'm still able to graduate. >->
Here are my scores for the SAT
Critical Reading 730
Math 760
Writing 630
Essay 6 (score range: 2-12)
I don't really think I should retake it. I don't think I can do much better on CR and depending on luck I might be able to get a 800 on math. I heard that UMCP doesn't look at the writing score and my grammar sucks.
I've taken these classes with the following grades.
Hon English
Grade 9: A,B 10: B,C
Regular English 11 Probably A,A
Algebra A,A
Hon geometry A,A
Hon Algebra A,A
Hon Precalc B,A
Hon chemisty A,A
Hon Bio A,A
Spanish 1, AA 2, AA
Hon Spanish 3 B,B
Hon US history A,A
Ap NSL B, A with a 5 on the test.
The rest are classes like pe and art.
So unwieghted GPA of 3.71
Weighted GPA:4.43
I'm planning to take Hon english 12( Prob B), AB calc(A or B), hon physics(a or B), AP bio(A), and AP world (A or B)next year.
I'm probably going to do priority application for UMCP.
I don't have really any extracurriculars to speak of and I don't think my college essay will be so good as I don't have anything to write about really.
I want my major to be Bioengineering like my older sister. My sister went to UMCP and got a full scholarship.
My counselor says I'm fine, but I don't really trust him.

write about your sicknes!!
dont know about the competitiveness of bioengineering because it is an LEP but u should be able to get into letters and sciences at least

My sickness isn’t really something I want to write about.

Your stats are good, but to be honest your lack of ECs will hurt you. If you write about your illness somewhere in your application and have your counselor mention it in his recommendation, I think you will get some forgiveness. It doesn’t have to be an essay (I can see how bringing up all those memories would be painful), but find a way to mention it somewhere prominent. Definitely have your counselor mention it though.

You look well qualified! Good luck!

My son had stats like yours and no ECs. He was accepted into engineering with pres. scholarship. If past experience says anything, you will be in.

ECs aren’t everything, sure they enhance your profile but your lack of them won’t hurt you that much especially if you mention that you were sick. I would strongly advise you to at least mention your sickness (if you don’t want to write an essay or something about it) somewhere in your app cause a year off is something that majorly affected you and your academic career.

Otherwise i really think you’ll get into both UMCP/UMBC.
I’m almost certain you’ll get into UMBC, but UMCP LEP program may be a toss up.

UMCP is mostly a numbers-oriented school in terms of admission. Your grades and your SAT scores are strong enough to get you in. If you are serious about getting in, you MUST apply by the priority date. The admit rate is much higher for those, and if you were to get any scholarship offers, it is dependent on the priority deadline. Good luck!
