What are my chances of getting into UNC? It is my dream school.

Hello, this is my first post on this website. I am a sophomore in high school and very concerned about getting UNCCH, my dream school. I am yet to take the SAT or ACT but I am planning to take the SAT sometime in June. I will take the ACT next year. I have a 4.25 (it will more than likely be a 4.375 by the end of the year) weighted GPA and 3.9 unweighted. I am on the varsity swim/dive team and was MVP of our state championship team my freshman year. I'm planning to take 4 AP classes next year and am still fretting about my chances of getting in. I'm very concerned about my class rank and weighted GPA. I live in NC and go to an extremely competitive high school. Thank you so much!

I am also in BETA club and am applying to NHS next year. I am also going to start a philanthropic club to raise money for cancer research.

We have a chances forum for a reason. Try there.

Whoops! Didn’t know :/

You’re competitive (it’s a match academically but selectivity makes it a low reach), so you should make a list that includes some safeties and a few matches.
Potentially, those would include: UNCW-Honors and/or UNCA Honors and/or Appalachian State Honors and/or NCSU Honors, USC Honors, Umiami, URichmond, Elon, College of Charleston Honors, Rhodes, Centre, Eckerd, Rollins, Tulane… Davidson would be another match for stats but reach for selectivity. Same thing for UVA or Vanderbilt.

You are on track to be competitive for UNC. Continue with a rigorous course load, maintain your grades, take on leadership positions in your ECs and work to get a very strong SAT or ACT score. The essays and short answers on the application are very important, so start your application early and get input from parents or your guidance counselor. However, as you know, UNC is quite competitive, even for instate students, so as MYOS1634 suggested, you need some safeties that you can be happy with. There are many other NC state schools to consider, depending on your interests. The University of South Carolina (USC) has some good merit-based scholarships, so be sure to check it out.
