Is the 4.2 your recalculated (UF) GPA?
Yes
You should compare yourself to other IB students in your school. How many students from your school were accepted last year? Any leadership?
@GatorDad305 , I apologize for my ignorance. Trying to figure the UF recalculated GPA out.
So UF will look at the English classes, math classes, FL, Science, social studies.
D will have 3 Independent study English classes on her transcript in addition to the regular core 3 English classes (9th-11th grade). . It will say “Ind study Eng 1 pre/AP” ( which is same as honors) then repeated for 2 and 3.
The core English classes will be 9th grade H, 10th grade H and 11th grade AP Lang.
I wonder how this will be looked at?
@funfit very few were accepted into UF last year but correct me if I am wrong but I heard there was an acceptance rate of only 16% last year.
@GatorDad305 question. The middle 50% they always reference is for fall admits , not summer not IA not PACE? Are the summer admits stats less? Assuming Pace is less.
@jhmoney The state university system publishes a matrix each year. In it, UF says the middle 50% for Fall of 2018 was 4.2 - 4.6 and 1300 - 1450 and 29-33. For summer, it says 4.2-4.5, 1270 - 1410 and 28-32. There is a slight difference between Fall and Summer. For the previous two years (at least), UF stated there was no difference between Fall/Summer.
I could be wrong, but I believe that the university world “keeps score” by comparing the fall class stats. Therefore, summer is not “counted” nor are the other pathways like PACE, IA, or the CC programs.
In a move of pure extrapolation which might not be accurate. It appears that the average fall GPA is 4.4 while summer is 4.35. Fall SAT is 1375 vs. 1350 for Summer. ACT Fall 31 vs. 30 summer. Slight differences but probably statistically significant enough to have to report it.
@BingeWatcher I can’t say for sure but my guess is that UF would count the independent study classes as part of the GPA calculation. I can’t say for sure. I would report it in the SSAR and get clarification from admissions just to be certain.
@GatorDad305 Aren’t the fall 2019 stats out? What were the summer ranges for fall 2019? And I’m assuming summer stats do not count PACE either. Or IA
@jhmoney those are the most recent stats that I have seen. Since the fall semester just started, I don’t think they will publish enrollment numbers for a while.
Usually the admissions annual report and the common data set show more details on enrollment vs admissions.
This story from February discusses the latest class from an admission perspective. https://www.gainesville.com/news/20190211/uf-admits-more-than-14000
@GatorDad305 can’t read article since I don’t subscribe for the pay per view articles
@GatorDad305 never mind found it
@gnnemani Your thread kind of got highjacked… Back to your original question, based on your stats you have an average chance, in my opinion. Your GPA is in the lane but on the low end. Based on the stats, 75% of kids admitted last year had a GPA of 4.2 or better. Your SAT is also in the UF lane, right in the middle. Looks like you have good rigor, which is a plus. With UF’s holistic admissions, no one is a sure thing. In your case, spend time on your essay and your application. If you think you can raise your SAT score by the December score deadline, then it might pay to do that. I would definitely have some safeties lined up. Good luck and let us know what happens.
@gnnemani If your recalculated GPA is 4.2 taking mostly AP/IB classes the last two years, you must have quite a few Bs. That may not be a big issue if your high school tends to grade harder than others and the top students have similar results. Do you have any idea where you are in the class ranking? Top 10%, 15%, 20%?
What is not adding up to me is that you say that very few get admitted from your high school, which apparently is an IB school. That seems strange. Any idea why that is?
I would schedule 30 minutes with your guidance counselor to understand where you are in the class ranking and how that compares to those accepted to UF over the last couple of graduating classes at your high school. That’s your best indicator of competitiveness.
BTW, UF acceptance rate was 34% last year: 14,136 of 41,407 according to the link in the above message.
@jhmoney @GatorDad305 My kid’s GC posted on FB the 2019 matrix from the state university system. I think that it would be difficult for UF to keep the narrative that there is no difference between Fall and Summer admit profile (25-75%):
GPA: S = 4.4 - 4.6, F = 4.3 - 4.6
SAT: S = 1270 - 1400, F = 1340 - 1470
ACT: S = 28 - 32, F = 30 - 33
70 SAT points on both the 25 & 75th percentile and 1-2 points on ACT are significant, IMO.
Looking across the 12 universities in the system, the others all have larger variances between Summer and Fall. The dumpster fire over in Tally is only slightly wider. While schools like USF and UCF are over 100 SAT points different. UCF’s is 140 at 25% and 160 at 75% and the GPA is 0.3 difference.
May I ask, Do we get to know what the GPA ends up after UF recalculates it?
I was told by AO at UF during our tour we are not told our recalculated gpa. So u never know if you actually did it correctly.
Seems like the SAT/ACT will impact summer or fall
@fl1234 Very interesting. Looking forward to seeing the entire matrix. A high school counselor will probably publish it online somewhere. The numbers don’t lie, and I can’t imagine that a high flyer or national merit scholar would be randomly admitted for summer.
@BingeWatcher @funfit I don’t think they notify you. Two years ago at the USF open house, I saw my daughter’s profile on the admission guy’s laptop, and I had figured her recalculated GPA to the hundredth place, which is all they showed. You probably have it right.
