What Are My Chances of Transferring Into Vanderbilt University?

I am currently a freshman at a public university in Georgia. My High School GPA was not too stellar (2.91). However, I've since hit the books and currently have a 4.0 after one semester (I should have a 4.0 after my second semester). I received two 5s on my AP exams (US History and American Government) and a 3 (European History). My ACT score was a 24. My ECs in high school were slim too none. In college, I am apart of Residence Hall Association and Minority Advisement Program. In my second semester, I will probably join two other organizations on campus. I am a Chemistry and History/pre-med major. I am a black female. Do I have a chance of getting into Vanderbilt or is this a lost cause?

I think you have a decent shot. My grades were similar in high school and I have an upwards 3.8 now. Are you applying for your sophomore year or junior year?

I am applying for my sophomore year.

Did you start school in the summer? I can’t imagine you already have your first semester grades for the fall yet.

Vanderbilt has the reputation for being fairly transfer friendly but the problem with applying for sophomore year is that they still look at your high school record and take your test scores into consideration. There’s no harm in applying for sophomore year (you could get lucky) but I think your chances will improve greatly if you apply as a junior, assuming you can maintain that 4.0 until then.

I probably should’ve said that I will have a 4.0 at the end of this semester. My lowest grade is a 95 so as long as I continue to study, I should have a 4.0. I had a lot of deaths, sickness in my family, and overall family drama while I was in high school. That is why my grades were so low. Does that matter to the admissions office or not??
