What are my chances of transferring to UCSB? :(

Hi all,

I've been really stressing out about college lately. I'm trying my hardest to finish my 60 units at my community college so that I can get out of my boring town and start the college life. At the moment I have 36 units, and I plan to take 24 units between my winter intersession and Spring semester.

My GPA will be a 2.9 by the end of this semester (I hope--I'm gonna work on getting it past 3.2). I have a few months of volunteer experience, a lot of work experience, and have gotten a few recognitions in high school.

The problem is that when I was in high school I was enrolled in college, and the first two years of my college transcript look pretty bad (Bs and Cs). I was in an early college high school, and that involved taking honors level high school classes with college at the same time. It might look good, yet bad because of my grades.

What are my chances of getting into UCSB if I can keep my GPA above a 2.8? I won't have the TAG done by the end of this fall to be eligible for fall 2010, but what are the chances of me getting in as a regular transfer?

EDIT: Oh I forgot to mention I'm transferring in as a Sociology major. I have all but two pre-major classes completed.

Anyone? :(

that gpa is slackin

if u can get it above 3.0 by end of fall u have a good shot

I think you will have a good solid chance if you get your GPA to 3.0 or above, as the above poster said.

isn’t the minimum a 2.4 though? I heard ify ou have a 2.8 you’re fine, though I dunno I guess the average transfer gpa is around a 3.2 that got admitted?

It is unfortunate that you will not be able to get TAG but if you can try to get your GPA up to a more secure 3.2 you’ll really up your odds, I know guys that got into SB around there. You’re not out of the game at 2.8 but you better have all Pre Reqs done and a good GPA in the courses of your Major. Those will be the borderline guys that get the spot. You will be in the mix though and if it helps I took 24 units in my last semester to make transfer so it’s totally possible. Just commit to your goal (in your case getting out of your boring town :)).

kinda in the same situation as you. ive looked at 08-09 stats and they admitted about 536 out of 8 hundred something applicants with that gpa so i mean thats a pretty good shot.
with a good essay and pre reqs done hopefully we can get in!

Sounds good! Thanks all, I’m definitely aiming for a better GPA. >.<

UCSB doesn’t read essays, so just work on the GPA and you’ll be in!

If you stayed a bit longer, and stop trying to rush better, your gpa will improve and will most likely get you in. Apply for Winter or Spring Admissions instead of Fall. You’re going to set yourself up for dissapointment if your GPA isn’t competitive enough. I think Sociology tends to be a popular major and you’ll be competing with a lot of Sociology majors with higher gpas.

^ Not good advice. You will be competitive enough to warrant an application to the school. And heck if you are not accepted you can still take route B and C. If someone can’t accept the possibility of rejection then they have a lot of growing up to do.

^My advise is solely on the fact that the poster wants UCSB, or at least posted for chances at UCSB instead of UCR, or in general all/any other UCs. Rushing just to get out of a “boring town” is fine if they don’t want to be competitive for 1 particular school. If they want to be competitive for a particular school, rushing may not be the best choice. Assuming they rushed, and got rejected, they would have finished igetc(i assume) and would essentially have to settle for another school, or stay in community college another semester, two, or three, taking classes that they don’t need(beyond igetc and 60 units) just to raise up their gpa in order to hopefully try again for particular 1 UC that they posted chances for.

@sophie24 - is it true UCSB doesn’t really read essays? bummer for me.
