I plan on applying as a computer science major. I am aware that UCLA is very competitive in that they only accepted 68 people out of 1.2k applicants. Is there anyway I can show that I’m a competitive candidate with a 3.4 GPA? If it helps, I am a female.
In my 1st and 2nd year of college, I’ve accumulated 7 C’s and my GPA was a 2.8, and I was able to jump from a 2.8 to 3.4 with a lot of classes, accumulated with an average of 4.0 all quarters and semesters. Would it help my application if they see a trending 4.0 all throughout my last 2 years. My ECs are not as much; I worked part time, I had an internship, and also joined clubs while in college. I also want to do TAP, but I doubt it would help me get into UCLA HSSEAS. Can someone give me advice on what I can do to make my application stand out?
Extremely unlikely.
It is fine to put in an application but I suggest that you focus on schools that are better matches for your academic profile.
UC admit range for CS transfers at UCLA last year:
3.88-4.00
I would say it will be a tough admit but with an upward grade trend, definitely worth an application since you never know…

I agree with @happy1. I think that you are better off focusing on other schools.
@phuuuong As others have mentioned, it will be very unlikely to get accepted into UCLA’s Computer Science major with a 3.4 gpa, so it is advisable to consider other universities. But if you really want to go to UCLA, I would suggest you consider applying as a Linguistics & Computer Science major since the UCLA admit ranges for that major were between 3.46-3.66. Although this major does not fall within the HSSEAS, it will still allow you to study some computer science with an emphasis on linguistics, if that might interest you. Good luck
With a 3.4 GPA, community college is probably your best path to a UC. You can get there, it’s just a different path.
@my2caligirls: OP is in College already according to their original post. They do not say if it is a CC or a 4 year.
^^ sorry missed that!!
Unfortunately as a transfer for CS it is slim to none. Focus on schools that are more within your target range.
Unfortunately, I’m gonna have to agree with 10s4life and say that your chances are pretty slim, only cuz CS is SUCH a competitive major. They reject 4.0s all the time for that major. What you have going for you is the upward grade trend, as UCs love that. But your overall GPA is just so far below the ideal range that it’s gonna be tough for them to accept you.
If you still want to try tho, see if you can retake some of those classes. If you are able to, then you could be in luck, as the UCs only count the higher grade for repeat courses. Participate in a lot of ECs related to CS, and keep a 4.0 from now on. OR you can even change your major. Maybe CS isn’t for you, and you can find another major that interests you. And that major could possibly be a non-impacted major that isn’t nearly as competitive.
I agree with the others in that you should probably set your eyes on other schools. There are still plenty of good schools that are well within your range. However, I don’t think that you have to give up on it completely, as just aiming for UCLA will make you have a high standard for yourself. That’s just my philosophy tho.
